I wish the camera would have panned out so you could see what a green gaffer does on the deck.

One thing is for sure, the guy is as good as it gets and he had a lot of fun filming the vid. If I were the guy teasing them I would have been calling for my turn.

Mike I remember that it was alot of fun if your fish had been 2inches closer it would have gotten a free ride home on that Willis 29 straight if I remember correct.

He's very good. The best thing is the fact he doesn't lift he leans back/walks back Leaning back gives so much better control than using your arms. I was fourtuante to learn how to gaff early on. We would gaff the cod coming up on the trot lines being hauled by a 14" wheel Having 400 hooks spaced 6' apart taught you how stick em and flip em off real quick. Hopefully he will pass that skill on to many to keep it alive

The next bite on a jig.
The thing I noticed when I watched it again was the two handed technique. Most of us are taught take two wraps and stick with the other hand (one handed) And if you can't learn to gaff lefty in your first week, then your probably not going to make it.

The two handed approach has always tweaked me out a little, but I may have to reconsider.

he's definitely good, no doubt about it. I might be the only one, but I saw a few shots that risked hitting the leader and a handful of shots that damaged meat. At least how I was trained, slow and steady was the way to go. keep the fish under water and land a head shot. maintain quality of meat for the customer. IMO, a good gaffman is one that lands a calm and controlled underwater headshot going straight from water to fish box, not gaffing fish mid-air. thats showboating, and I dont have much tolerance for showboating on my jobs. save that for the whitetails at the bar.
