Full Moon Hawaiian Mahi

Headed out this past Sunday morning with kind of a double whammy working against us. A full moon was up all night and the ocean was glassy smooth, both conditions considered the makings of poor trolling out here. But, we were raring to go fishing and, remembering that luck happens when preparation meets opportunity, just wanted an oppotunity because we surely were prepared! Pushed throttle in the oily calm water and cruised on plane out into the channel while looking for signs of fish, birds, porpoise, anything.

Finally reached an area where there were scattered birds, so throttled back and deployed a full spread of SuperBars. Worked the area and saw increased signs of life with flying fish skittering about. Looked back to check the pattern and saw a mahimahi fly through the air and dive bomb my JT - hookup! Got that mahi into the bag and iced it down; fresh fish for dinner!



Continued to work the area, then spotted a pod of false killer whales. Those guys hunt the same fish we're after and are better at it than we are, so we ceded the immediate area to them and moved on a ways. The calm water was looking like a blue desert when the JT got hit again! Woohoo, another mahi accepts the invitation for a boat ride to dinner.



Seeing how slow the bite is and having worked through the tide change, we turned for home. A while later we get a farewell gift in the form of a third mahi tagging the JT. Now we're really happy because we've got one mahi for each of the three of us aboard. On the way in, a small YFT commits suicide by hitting a MeatBall to give us some fresh tuna sashimi as well. Slow day overall, but the Archer SuperBars saved the day for us!
