    Formula to approximate fish weight

Thought I would post this for all to see. It works as an estimate on most fish.

length x girth squared divided by 800 = approximate weight

example....new N.C. blackfin tuna state record

    length....38 inches
    girth......29 inches

    38 x 841=31958 divided by 800 = 39.9475

The new state record weighed 40 pounds even. Pretty damn close.

Remember on bills that it is lower jaw fork length.

It works ok. The girth measurement needs to be accurate.

In my experience long skinny fish, and short fat fish mess it up.

As Franky said accurate on most fish accept long skinny fish will throw it off bad. Was pretty close on a blue one we killed a few years ago weighed 534.5 chart was 540.77 lbs.

    length 109 inches
    girth 63 inches
    109 x 3969 =432621 divided by 800 =540.77625

Most fish, I was thinking about Flounder???????

I think this is mostly for tuna and marlin. Its not an exact science, but good to know.
