My girl friend and i are heading down to Key Largo in Mid-March as well. I was thinking about towing a Jon-boat down there but my dad talked me out of it. I don't know much about the area either but we're going to do alot of fishing and diving. It seems like there are fish to be caught.
It would be great to have some other to explore with.

Check with Capt. Jim Hale, he fishes the upper keys and the everglades and can help you with what's biting when and where.
Personally, I would stick with back water fishing. The wind will be blowing at least 20 - 25 kts. Offshore its actually a weird time. Yea you can catch a sail, or dolphin but it just didnt seem worth it to me. The tarpon usually just start as do bonefish. It changes fast down there that time of year.
They do say that Islamorada is the sportfishing capital of the world! We've got a bunch of boats...a 50' Evans and a 46' Whiticar to get out offshore for sails, kingfish, dolphin. Reef fishing for yellowtails, mutton snappers...all good. We also have a 19' twin vee to take you backcountry should you decide to explore the back.
Check us out at our web-site here! You can call Captain John Oughton anytime at 305-481-6527!
This is prime time for swordfish, day or night. The kings are strong up there right now as is the blackfin tuna bite. Big sharks are always available. Tarpon bite is on inside as is snook but the highlight inshore is big bonefish in the upper keys and permit on nearshore wrecks and on the grass.
I miss the Keys
ant too shabby down here either tho![]()
For swordfish in Key Largo, try Jim Mulcahy. www.finsfeatherscharters.com Better yet do the sailfish?swordfish combo from Noon to 2 AM. I have fished with Jim a number of times and highly recommend him.
The last time I went down there with the family we stayed in a nice little place in Marathon. Its in the middle and was an easy drive eaither way to do things. I fished with Main Attraction charters and had a great time. We were there around the end of Feb. The place we stayed at had a few small boats that you could take and fish near the hotel. I want to go back and do a sword fish trip the next time we head that way.
Best place for information is fromthewatermagazine.com. Gives you an array of boats to choose from in the Keys, along with fishing reports.
And great billfish reports from around the world as well on billfishreport.com.
