    Fishing Logs

Who uses them? I am gearing up for my charter business here on the island and want to start keeping detailed records of trips. I found one sight that sold some software to use as a template for a log but the site wwas under construction.

If you use them, what kind to you use. Do you record anything other than date, time, barometric pressure, water temp, solunars and water condition?

Point me in a direction. Pics would be great.
    Thanks in advance

I log everything by hand in a notebook...old habit hard to break.

everything gets logged..... moonphase, seatemp, depth, time of day, bait/lure, conditions, boat speed if trolling, lat/lon, any details of particular trip that may be important, etc.
Successful fishing is simple-opportunity meets preparation.

The more detail the better but... anything is better than nothing. One of the best tips I was given was by a guy who had a tape recorder that he talked into whenever he saw anything significant. I know for a fact sometimes I don't remember everything that happened out there so a running commentary in a tape recorder is a great idea.

Cool website. Great idea about the recorder, I have a digital one that I bought to study for my OUPV and masters license that will fit the bill perfectly.

on the justreleased we log alot of stuff also:

    a. how many boxes of rasberry danish have been consumed at time of hook up.

    b. how many of us were simultaneously indulging on sweetish fish.

    c. after gorging on fruit to offset cappy's gout, was there a line to the forward head, and have the baby wipes been broken out.

    d. mostly, our bites seem to come when biggie smalls is playing on CD or when the cappy has rolled his ankles and is screaming in pain lying on his back amidships.

    mmm, Mrs Hays.
I've used mini-recorders for three decades now, from my commercial days through all my game-fishing seasons. I have boxes of black smoke, screaming reels, hi-fives and lots of chattering gear-boxes sitting on my shelf.

Tape is good, and not easy to get wrong (as long as you make sure you do not overwrite one you have recorded on). Digital is also good, but I find it fiddlier in some ways than the tape, and once you press that delete button your info is gone instantly. At least with tape you have half a chance of realising what you are doing wrong and stopping the deletion before all your details have gone, plus you can make the tapes "re-write proof" after you've finished. You can also write on the bloody things, which is very useful. To be honest, I like the big chunky buttons on the tape-recorders too, unlike the small fiddly fashionable things you get on most digital recorders I have come across.

At the end of the day, every detail you wish to record in a written log can be transcribed. You can still use the tape of memory card again if you wish, but I kept all my tapes. Sometimes on a dull day I'll plug one in and go back in the seasons. It's amazing the details you forget and grin at years later. Some of the funniest comments are the ones that often don't make it into the written log...... grin

There are some voice-recognition programs on the market that might transcribe your log for you, but I admit to liking writing down what happens in a big note-book that you can then stick on your shelf, complete with scribbled maps, diagrams, photos and tips.

One other bit of advice I can give you is that a small digital camera is a great recording device too - they're superb for landmarks, screen shots of the sounder, boat profiles and lists of GPS numbers - the odd shot of a crewman doing something stupid is fun too. Mostly I use it for recording GPS info or screen shots of the chart plotter though - far easier than writing down things in the heat of battle on a pitching fly-bridge. It's easy to then share info later with other people if you have the inclination.

I'd imagine if you can find a FLIP that doesn't break then they'd be a good tool to use too.

For specific details such as GPS numbers during the day I'll use a piece of paper and a pen on the bridge, but a wipe-off marker pen and a piece of dash-top gelcoat are hard to beat in an emergency !
