If you have the chance to go, then GO!!! Life is not a dress rehearsal.
The boat, shipping?? I would say go & see if you like it before you spend the $$ to ship a boat there. You may find something to buy for the cost of shipping your boat.

I just bought a boat in Guam and I've been loving it. Unfortunately work is interfering with fishing so I will be on a month's hiatus while I drive around the pacific in my other boat. I was looking at roughly 15-20k to ship my boat from Guam to Mass so I dont think thats going to happen! Hope you get a better deal. There are plenty of perfectly good boats here for sale though. I plan on doing a summers worth of Marlin and Swordfish fishing here. When are you arriving?

As for the fishing, YFT and Mahi have been great, with the occasional wahoo. No Marlin around until April though. Some sailfish inshore, along with Ulua. Lots of offshore reefs and ledges holding dogtooth and amberjack. Fishing here is like Hawaii, but the fish dont get as big. Only difference.

At least if Im not going out, neither is anyone else on the island. Hauled the boat for 'upgrades' just in time, got to ride a 25' breaker into the harbor. That was Jan 12th. Since then its been 18+ seas. Nobody has gone out. Its dying now.

I want to clarify what I said about the fishing being 'like Hawaii'. Similar species. We dont have have big-eye and they dont have doggies. Not much else of a difference there. Deeper water here, warmer and more clear too. Main forage species are flying fish and small tunas. Wahoo average 20lb, Mahi 12lbs, YFT 20lbs, Marlin 200lbs. Heavy commercial small boat fishery inshore for reef fish, mahi, wahoo and tuna, consequently dogtooth tuna, Ulua, and Amberjack get almost no pressure, and not many here (myself included) can afford deep drop set-ups for the bountiful deep water snappers and groupers.

When you get here go out on a few charters, see if you like it. Of course nothing beats trolling for 'offshore' species less than 100 feet from shore in 2000' of water. Screw the Virginian 'run 60 miles to the shelf' nonsense.

    My brother was in guam,

I believe they have a military base there. Believe the guy that said every boat there is for sale. It costs more to get it there than its worth. I dont think you need a really big rig there either. If you buy, the word will get out when you leave and Im sure the price will reflect it when you sell. They know you cant bring it, and cant take it with you when you leave.......call it a rental with rights to pass it on when you leave. You would probably be better off becoming quick friends with a guy with a boat and pay him for fuel all the time.
Dont act like me and ask him what happened to all his hair......thats not the way to get invited to go fishing.

The time table for the job is later this year. They are building a huge new base for 9,000 Marines from Japan, it will be a 15 to 20 Billions dollar job. Base housing, Hospitals, power plants, roads, ship docks everything you need for the new base. Im 100% sold on the move and my wife is well 80%, our parents are geeting older and taking a year or so away from them will be hard but we will have to cross the bridge.

As far as the boat I believe that I will leave mine here and see if I can find one there or find a friend once I get there. The more I read about the Island the more I want to go. Construction jobs are getting hard to get in the states and I HATE the cold weather. Thanks for the info on the offshore fishing I will keep you all posted on what the "HER" final thoughts are.

LOTS of new jobs coming. Of course, there is a reason why the marines are getting kicked off Japan. Many people are not happy about the move. Guam is a 212 square mile island with 300k people on it. The military owns 1/3 of the island and much that is left is uninhabitable due to mountains. It can be dense. At the same time, an island, so most things are imported and it can be hard to find the right item for the job here.

Feel free to give me a PM when you come, I'm always looking for crew. The ONO is a very efficient fishing machine, long outriggers for marlin, and a comfortable pilothouse to keep the weather out. We can run up to 9 lines.
