Are fishing destinations in Mexico still safe?

With all the reports on the news I wonder if fishing destinations in Mexico are still safe. From the news it sounds like things have really taken a turn for the worst. Most of the violence seems to be concentrated in the north. How is it in Cabo, Ixtapa, PV ect... Haven't been anywhere in Mexico in years but in the past PV and Cabo had plently of security and the people welcomed American's with open arms. I ask because I am possibly planning a trip in the next few months.

I vacation in Mexico every year. But always in the Yucatan. We have never had any problem over the last 23 years. The tourist areas support about 70% of the legal Mexican revenue, so they are very well protected. However I would not travel out of the tourist areas. I would not rent a car and drive across the country from Playa Del Carmen to Xtapa. You will be going through areas where there is very little law or protection. But there should be no problem in flying into any of the areas you mention.

Check for travel warnings at travel.state.gov. The State Dpt does a pretty good job in describing what type of crime or scam can be encountered in differnt areas of a given country. I travel often and find that as long as you don't look like a viable target in a tourist area, you will not be targeted. Also, if you ID and avoid the areas where nefarious acts often occur, you also avoid crime.

    The water is not safe........

......... but traveling is very safe.
Just came back from Punta de Mita which is north of Puerto Vallarta. Not even a hint any issues that are going on in the border areas. Like anywhere else in the world you can put yourself in harms way by not being "smart" about how you conduct yourself.
Yes, the news about the problem areas in Mexico is not good. I really think the news media sensationalizes it.
I was talking with a fellow American that has property and businesses in Punta de Mita and he said that avoiding vacation destinations in Mexico (hundreds of miles from the border areas) would be like like avoiding Ocean City, MD because there was a murder in Atlanta.
I would not hesitate to go to any tourist destinations in Mexico.

I just got back from a Mexican fishing trip to Barra Navidad which is between Puerto Viarta and Acapulco. Not a hint of any danger there at all. I asked about the local crimes and was told this year someone stole a dunk guys wallet (but others speculate he lost it). They said last year someone stole an old lady's purse. That was it for the crimes.

BTW, it costs me more to gas my boat for a day trip here than we spend for a charter in Mexico and we hammered the Yellow fin tuna (kept 5 big ones a day) and stripped marlin (released).

    NOT ME!!!

    Mexico Safety

If you check out rates of violence per One hundred thousand persons in the place where you live in comparison to anywhere in Mexico (even the border towns where all the drug violence is centered) you'd be on the next plane south.

Understand that I'm talking about violent crime, not thefts. Stealing from gringos is the national pass-time of Mexico, but they do it politely.

The simple answer is; Yes, for the most part the resort areas are relatively safe. You still need to be careful and stay aware of what's happening around you though.

A couple of months ago, one of the deckhands from the long range boat Intrepid was held up at gun point and shot twice in front of a crowd of people in Cabo.

    FISH HARD!
