The port of the Sierpe River in Southern Costa Rica.
I'm sure you're all saying...."Sierpe River whaaaaat?" right now...which is my point exactly. The nearest marinas or ports are 60 miles to the north in Quepos and 60 miles to the south in Jimenez. No one knows this place even exists. We've pretty much got the ocean - and the largest estuarine river system in Costa Rica - all to ourselves. The river fishing is good, the off-shore is great, and our inshore is unparalleled. During the dry season a half dozen or less boats will leave from the area. In the "green" season, I'll be the only boat fishing most days I go out. Less crowds, less pretense, more fish...a no brainer in my book.
It is a longer run to the good grounds here though and we don't encounter schools of big tuna with the frequency of the Golfo Dulce or Suenos.
Playa del Carmen Mexico is pretty sweet as well...you can have a pleasant meal at a funky restaurant, party all night at posh clubs, and then catch a variety of bottom fish and pelagics a mere half mile offshore.
Great fishing, easy to get around and lots more to do.
