I have just joined this forum and hopefully will be able to get some information from it. My name is Todd and I am looking for internship/job for this upcoming summer. I have always wanted to own my own fishing charter and continue to take the steps towards doing so. I am at the bottom as of right now and would really like to get some work ecperience on one or somehow be involved in one. I am in Alabama right now but am free to travel. If anyone knows anyone that needs help or needs help themselves please email me. Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Life gives me a new perspective and outlook daily.

I would suggest a party boat to start with. It will give you the basic skills and they will hire someone with no exp. Then I would get on one of the resmondo type rigs out of orange beach. I worked on the intimidator for Johnny Greene for a year and those guys know whats up. That's my suggestion.

Get to an area of good charter fishing whether that be NC, Florida, NE, or Gulf coast and work the docks. Introduce yourself, offer to help out (cleaning, running errands, etc.) Be there all hours, (i.e. morning and evening when the charters return) Ask about free ride alongs. Let the captains and mates know that you are there to learn. Don't expect tips on the ride along, but work your ass off! Befriend as many mates as possible (this might be hard at some marinas, but break into the clique). Watch and learn absorb everything you can, but only apply the things that will work and produce. Make sure you can filter out the bullshit bravado!
After you have gained some knowledge and basic rigging skills and met some contacts your chance will come! To increase your odds be at the docks a half hour before the morning rush begins. If the boats pull out at 5:30, that means the charters will typically start arriving at 5am and your ass should be there at 4:30. The key is you want to show a potential employer that you are willing to work. I guarandamntee you will be the right spot when that one mate either oversleeps for the last time or just doesn't post.
One last thing, Keep the partying and drinking to the blow days! You want to be clear headed and don't want to be the one who misses the boat in the morning. The marina's are a small community and word will get around whether you are dependent or not.
Also keep checking the job board here and at www.inthebite.com Alot of captains out there are willing to train from scratch.
