Cool Fishing Believe it, Or Not ?

Starting this thread to read some Funny and Strange stories about what you have caught fish with? Or what you may have found inside a fish.

I Know a guy who caught a bluefin tuna with a piece of Taffy ( Air Head)

I heard of a fisherman who had a squid bar made of plastic Bananas that caught a lot of tuna.

I found .11 cents in a Wolf fish.

next year when the fish are biting I am going to try a banana rigged with a skirt,

I am also going to try a Hot Dog dipped in cheese Wiz.

Lets hear your Believe it or not story ?

Was once on a boat when the captain saw someone eating a banana... Captain blew a fuse, and makes it get thrown over. One of the mates puts it on a bottom rod with squid.
5 mins later, up comes a 60# cobia.

Once caught a Cod off shore Jax in the summer (84 degree water). We were like ???? WTF is that?

And one of the guys round here caught a 40+ gag grouper on a pork chop. Not sure all the details, but apparently fried pork chops are black belly killers.

in 1974 a marine biologist fishing on the Oceana Pier in Atlantic Beach noticed and unusal bulge in the belly of 8" sand perch he just caught. He decided to do some investigation (autopsy) to see what was causing this fish belly to bulge. Turns out the fish had swallowed a 1/2 carrot solitare diamond ring.

    Winter flounder

Back in the 1970's fishing with my father we caught about 20 fish when the bite turned off. I decided to clean the fish on the boat while we had the lines still in the water. One of the flounder was still alive. I guess my hand was steady and my knife was sharp because shortly after dropping what I thought was a now dead fish overboard, we had a tap on the line and I reeled up a still live filleted winter flounder. We stopped fishing.

That's a great strory. At least you didn't have to clean it again.

I was on a trip a few years back with some buddies. One night, we were shark fishing off the beach in Jensen Beach, FL, and the bite was slow. The seas were pretty big for that area, with high winds. We were fishing two rods, both rigged with large Jack heads.

Suddenly, one of the rods took a mighty rip, so fierce it ripped the rod and sand stake right out of the sand. The rod took off down the sand, I chased it and dove but it was too late, the rod was gone.

We cracked open some beers and laughed, and about two hours later, after setting and re-setting the other line multiple times, called it a night. However, as we pulled in the line for the final time, we found the other line, and rod, attached in full. Although the reel was a total loss (sand) the rod was unharmed.

3 days later, it was around 2am, and we were night fishing a bridge down in the keys for tarpon. We had been throwing plugs for hours, caught some fish earlier, but the bite had slowed. I decided to take a little break, and put on an egg sinker/leader/hook with the biggest dead shrimp I had in the cooler. I put the rod in one of the plastic holders mounted to the center console, the cheap ones.

20 minutes later, the rod took a massive strike, and the rod holder and rod were ripped completely from the console, and sent soaring into the water. About the same time, a masive tarpon jumped from the water and came crashing down, about 30 yards out. My rod was gone (it was my best rod, a plugging rod).

Distraught, I put a big black Bomber on another rod and went back after the tarpon. Keep in mind, this is happening in some heavy current right under a keys bridge at night. AT LEAST 2 hours and 300 casts later, I felt a strange feeling on my line, and sure enough, here comes my rod : I had snagged the line, and everything was intact. I pulled in my trusty rod, we were all in shock. It was good as new.

This was almost 10 years ago now, and I still use that same rod AND reel every time I fish.

When I had my fish cleaning biz, I would see all kind of things when cleaning fish especially stripers. I always clean the bass from the back bone. Threw a bass up put my hand on its belly and the belly moved, the fish was stone dead but its belly moved. opened her up (she was only 10 15 lb bass not huge) out came a very nice sized croaker still kicking told the fish today was your lucky day threw him in the lagoon and of he went. Thanks Tim
