Had a make up today, didn't start out to well. Had 2 guys drive up from Wilmington and were already there when I got there, Scott and Eric. Eric fished with us on our first trip, hard core and eager to learn. That wasn't the problem. We had to wait for one of the guys to get bailed out of jail for a DUI. I am watching the fleet stroll out past us and am dying. Finally cast lines at 6:00. Put em out around the 550 line and it wasn't long before the planer gave a very gentle bounce and we rewarded the taker, a 40 lb hoo with a free ride to the dock. Tim was listening to what was happening with the fleet and it wasn't much so we pounded the area up and down the break 30 to 70 fthms all day. DON'T LEAVE FISH TO FIND FISH! We'd get a nibble about every 15 to 20 mins till about 11:00. Had a couple hoos in the box and a couple gaffers then it shut down for a couple hrs. I guess it was around 10:00 I saw the planer do a little bounce, jumped on it and backed the drag. Gave a few cranks to make sure he was there but the line wasn't coming up and I couldn't gain any ground. What the heck is going on here. Then he made a run, about 18 lbs of drag and leaving town. I've never had a fish on the planer do this. Big hoos will stay down all the way to the boat so that is what I figured he was. We got the planer up finally. I got the first clip off and was gently trying to get to the second when BOINK SLACK S&*@! During the 2 hr lull I heard of 2 blues caught and one pulled off out on the 100 fthm line. We decided to stay and go for the meat. Picked up another hoo and gaffer to finish the day at 3:00. Not a banner day but the crew was happy and had enough meat to even give Tim and I a little. Another beautiful day on the water with great folks and catch a few fish. Tim as usual, was a pleasure fishing with you Bro. He's going to post up some pics when he gets home.
God I love this job!!!
