This last set of pics is from Saturday. Paul and I did yet some more sanding and scraping, and before we went home laid down the first 60 bucks worth of marine tex on the damaged gunnals. The boat took a nice hit about 10 years ago up on the bow that was just quick fixed with 5200. I sanded it down and dug out all of the old repair work, and after just one coat of marine tex It is looking a lot better. I will post pictures of further progress as I work on it.

New OEM whaler 3 piece rubrail kit is being shipped ($113.00 with two OEM red Whaler decals from Twin Cities Marine in Wisconsin ) call there for all your whaler needs, and ask for SUE. I have two whaler dealers within driving distance to my house, and I will call sue for anything I need any day of the week because of her knowledge and speedy shipping of tough to find parts.

Also, if anyone is interested in what I will be using to finish the inside of the hull, I chose to go with a product called Ultra TUFF, a company out in colorado who makes a marine grade -rubberized agregrate coating that is sprayed on (Almost similiar to a Line-X bedliner. Ultra tuff is used on everything from pool decks to finishes on large cruise ships. The company has specially developed a pigment called BOSTON WHALER BLUE to match the vintage blue gelcoat. I opted to go this route not only for its competitive price, but it hides a lot of fiberglass blemishes especially the spider cracking notorious on the classic whalers. Shoot me a pm if you want to know more about the ultra tuff coating. I did so much research on it I feel obligated to pass it on to anyone else looking to do a restoration. 69.00 a gallon for the ultra tuff, and another 40.00 for the special primer. It cost me 180 bucks for all the interior coating supplies.

Until the next update....Stripers are moving in I better hurry up

looking good, so far! I, too, used Twin Cities for parts on my whaler. they are exceptional and pretty much the Only place to go for hard to find stuff.

She's coming along nicely! Looking forward to seeing the progress and results. My hull is identical to yours and has the spidr cracking too, no paint layers on mine though. I was considering selling her but you've inspired me to consider rehabbing her!

Thanks for the comments guys! I know a lot of the pictures look alike, but if you really look at the details all the hours i'm putting in are finally starting to show.

Update: I'm Building a 16x40' deck for a customer, and in the 88 degree heat today all I really had on my mind was a Coors light around 4pm. After my third, I said screw it I'm not too tired to work on the boat! I have been sitting the boat outside in the sun since I laid the marine tex down last Saturday night, and it finally got rid of the 'waxy haze' on the surface of the marine tex and I was ready to sand. I hit the both topsides with 50 grit on my orbital sander, and contoured it pretty good. Second I came back with 150 grit knocking more material down, and finished it off tonight with 180 grit hand sanded, and it is smoother than a babies bottom. The gunnel topsides now look like they are brand new again, and the marine tex is tough as nails. I have never seen the boats lines look this crisp in my lifetime, It is exciting.

*Both my rubrail+whaler decals and my Ultra TUFF rubberized paint showed up today, so now i have something to push me toward getting the prep done. What really sucks is My Captains License prep class starts this Friday at 8am, and it will have me locked down all weekend! Alright, until next time.

Thought I would post up some of my recent progress on the hull....I have been squeezing in a few hours here and there in between framing the deck and getting my OUPV. (Exam is SATURDAY !)

    - Got the hull flipped on the trailer...with my breath held, I opened my eyes to see what shape the bottom was in. It has one 'hole' in the bottom, more like a 3'' crack through the glass. I opened it up a bit for the repair, and i was amazed how well the closed cell whaler foam from 1960 repelled the water...there was none saturated, and no rot found. One coat of marine tex went on the other night...got the transom skimmed smooth, did some more fairing, and had enough left over to get a coat on the crack . Almost sanded all the way down, ready for the Interprotect 2000e Primer! Until next time~

Excellent job documenting the restoration. I have a '65 13' Whaler that could get redone too.

    Are you on Continouswave.com?

Here is tonight's progress. Then entire hull is faired down to the original crazed and spider cracked gelcoat! This took me about 30 hours of sanding and about 200 hook and loop sanding discs! The surface is baby smooth, you can't even catch a fingernail in any of the spider cracks, and any blisters are in the process of being marine tex'd and sanded. Sometime next week i will be applying the Interprotect 2000e epoxy barrier coat primer, followed by new black bottom paint and ice white topside paint. Stay tuned!

-John, thanks for the compliments. I am putting all these pictures up because I have appreciated so many other peoples restorations and pictures are priceless, so I wanted to add my project to the public eye. Continuous wave is awesome! I have been surfing their site for about 5 or 6 years now. Very helpful website when it comes to classic whalers!

Forgot to include the pictures of my hardware. These are the original eyes I took off of the boat. I glass bead blasted them today and they came out as good as new. Not bad looking pieces for being 50 years old!

I will hopefully have some pictures of the primed hull in the next few days!
