Today we had a gang from Topsail Beach and Fayetteville N.C. aboard for more of our wonderfully frigid Virginia Beach striper fishing. Plan was to turn Matador south until the water got warmer and look around. Air temps were about 24 degrees when we got there this morning and the water had cooled down pretty significantly at rudee to 39 degrees at the sea buoy at rudee . So we started south and most of the run the water continued to be a frigid 39.9 degrees. Eventually at the state line temps began to rise and a few miles south we found 42 degree very clear green water. We started out all alone in nice menhaden marks, a couple birds, and a pair of humpback whales hanging out close by. After stopping the boat to fish, we realized our gear was iced up and had to spend a couple minutes chipping ice off to get everything to work. In about a half hour, we caught two fish. Both were mid 30# class fish. Then I got a call that there was a good bite about three miles north of me so off we went. We got there and it was easy. Lots of menhaden and lots of stripers. They were biting everything but the deep rigs were hottest. Caught a quick limit of a better class of fish and made steam for home. Most of our limit today was over thirty pounds. None over 40# for us but they were a little better than the quality of fish we have seen over the last couple of days.
We have the day off tomorrow to get ready for the tournament this weekend. I could still use an angler on thursday and one on friday. The all inclusive price is $250 per head and includes tournament fees fishing expenses and some extras. If anyone is interested, give me a call at 757-749-6008. We also have next thursday available for charter if anyone is interested in that. Thanks, Jake www.matadorcharters.com
