Myself, Arctek Jim, and his buddy Ron headed out at 4:30 Saturday....
Went to BI for some fresh bait but couldn't get 'em to eat, even though I did mark a couple nice stacks of fish....first time this year that BI skunked me.... Saw some dolphins that followed us for a while by Coxes. Headed to the 600 line southwest corner of the Dump to try for those Yellows that were reported....figured what the hell, why not? Temps were 73+ out there, water was beautiful color, was pretty damn sloppy (probably 15-20 easy). Trolled around abunch of high flyers, 2 other boats out there. NADA. Finally started trolling up the western inside edge of the Dump. Picked up 2 bluefish 2/3 of the way up. Got our fresh bait LOL. Saw a huge Seaturtle, and a couple sunfish. Signs of life, yes, but not the right kind.... Picked up and headed up north a bit and set our drift at about 11. Drift started out nice, as the wind laid down from what we had south of the Dump, but still had a nice breeze and drift. No action for a while, and the wind dropped right out to nothing, screwing up our drift. Baits would go one way, slick 90 degrees to it, the current was switching...lol....we couldn't win. We tagged 3 Blue Sharks free-swimming, caught a couple, and Ron even caught a 10' (~250#) Blue Shark while pulling in a dogfish on his custom fluke rod with a tiny little conventional and 30# Powerpro! The Blue had lockjaw hanging onto the dogfish, but Ron somehow got him to the boat and we got him to let go before he got spooled LOL. Then we livelined the dogfish and the dummy ate it again, getting hooked this time. Gave up around 6PM, started heading in. Around Coxes we see a splash in front of the boat a couple hundred yards....Then we see it again, but this time we see a long whip flailing around in the air.....Jim says one word..."THRESHER"! We scramble to get a trolling spread out while the shark breaches a several more times in the same spot, probably beating up a bluefish or something. He goes down and we troll the area quick, just a last chance...never know. Pulled in a Bluefish on our spread in Mudhole, picked up and headed back to the dock. LONG day but the weather was nice, saw lots of life, some cool sights, good company, lotsa laughs......maybe the full moon screwed up some of the bite....who knows. Even the Blue Sharks were reluctant although they stuck around for hours. I got a few pics that I will upload tomorrow, forgot to download the digicam. |

OK, the first pic is Ron with his custom fluke rod and a plain bottom rig, pulling up the dogfish and the 10' Blue Shark with lockjaw holding onto the dogfish. Somehow with the 30# Powerpro and little tiny Millionaire reel, he got it to the boat and we got him to let go of the dogfish LOL.
The last 3 are Ron fighting the same 10' Blue AFTER we livelined the dogfish on our pitch bait rod, and the dummy came back, this time eating the dogfish and hooking himself LOL. ![]() |

Your right, it was Wednesday around 3pm. The heat must be getting to me, I can't keep track of the days I travel to Willimantic CC to play golf from North Jersey
as I was day dreaming about being on the boat. |
