Capt. Bill Brown and I spoke Thursday afternoon, and he gave me some info. on where the Threshers "might be lying" at a spot SE of Block. I had a trip set up with my friend Tom and his father, so I decided to try out the spot.
After some less-than-cooperative Bluefish in the AM, having to work our azzes off for a couple (even the Charters out there were getting aggravayed LOL), we finally headed to the spot later than I would have liked.
Seeign some birds "following" bait in the area, I decided to stop right there. Threw some chum out, set the first deep bait out in the distance.
Working on the second bait, I set the depth, ballooned it, and was paying it out. Then I see this huge white shape below the balloon. The shape disappears, but I could swear something is playing with the line.....but the balloon didn't move
Then I see what happened....the line quickly runs off the starboard side.....the balloon had come off LOL, and the rod tip bends....I grab the rod, set the hook, and immediately this damn good-sized Thresher fully breaches, heading away from the boat, and comes crashing down and disappears....
He's hooked solid, and is running....then he stops and starts jumping & thrashing on the surface, his LONG whiptail flailing around like crazy.....this was purely a "HOLY SH*T!!!" moment LOL.
In his moment of tantrum, he apparently gets above the leader, and slices the line with his tail clean off. One jump from him now that he's free, and he disappears, my limp line hanging in the water, and all of us staring in disbelief.
Well, I reel in nothing, set out the other 2 rigged rods, and rig this one back up and set it out. Now we wait and see if we can nail another, hoping there is another hanging around. I wasn't betting that we'd see THAT one again, it was pretty pissed off.
Anyway, the rest of the day was beautiful but very quiet. We were spoiled, having hooked that one no more than a few minutes after stopping the boat. Picked up one Blue Shark, that had a tag, I recaptured the tag, inserted a new one, measured, sexed, etc the shark and cut him loose.
We even picked up after 3 1/2 miles and reset back in where we hooked up in the AM. Still nothing but one pull on a rod, but whatever it was dropped it and didn't come back.
Anyway, it was an exciting several minutes in the AM. Now I just wait for my NMFS hat to arrive LOL.
Thanks BILL for putting me on them! This info. couldn't have been more accurate yesterday LOL
