I've had reasonable success fishing out of Kona the week after Christmas. Have you caught a spearfish yet? Probably as good a place to do that.
In 2 different trips - total of 4 fishing days - couple of blues, spears and stripeys and assorted meatfish. Not huge numbers
but pretty decent.
Kona is pretty civilized to boot
There are usually some big tuna around as well
Chad's place is the real deal.......please check out his website at www.paradisefishing.net .....the resort sits up on the hill and provides 180 degree of some of the best [ocean] views anywhere.........the area is very premitive, complete with private bunglows w/ clubhouse that has an infinity pool w/ swim-up bar and small restuarant w/ gourmet meals (lots of tasty fish/local fare). Other than the resort, and Curtis's place up the street, there isn't much around. Chad's rates are all inclusive and are very reasonable. His captains are 2nd - 4th generation LOCAL fishermen and can provide the best of both offshore and inshore. These guys are serious fishermen and when a fish is caught, their smiles will be just as big as yours. Chad is also very customer serviced based so he will make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of your trip. To contact Chad directly, send him an email at chad@paradisefishing.net (note the dot net, not dot com).
BTW, I will be headed to panama very soon, as the 68' Boomer starts its journey there this evening from PV.......the boat will probably be there for 3 months. I will post regular reports starting in a few weeks (provide by my buddy/owner). Boat will be slipped in Panama City when not fishing. When fishing the Coiba area, we will most likely be staying with Chad (room permitted). I probably won't make it down until January unfortunately.

Lots of good advice here, but whatever you do, don't miss taking a hard look at PV, aka "Cow Town" for its huge tunas. That's kind of unfortunate because they also have world class black and blue marlin fishing down there, but it takes a back seat promotion and media-wise because the tuna fishermen who go there and who absolutely love the place.
Sails, striped marlin, the aforementioned blacks and blues, the monster yellowfins, huge wahoos (see below for one that didn't get weighed, but should have), dorado, mucho gallo's (roosters), giant pargo's (cubera snappers) and more abound down there. Plus it's a short jump from the U.S. to your destination and on top of all of that, it's vastly less expensive than many other venues that cost an arm and a leg and take forever to get to and home from.
Don't let Josh scare you away. Down deep inside he is one of the hardest of the hard core and a helluva good fisherman. A little crazy seeming, yes, but that's mostly for show, I think. He also runs a pretty expensive operation for down there. There are a lot of others well worth checking out, including the Manzanita operation and several other very good others.
Again, whatever you do, do yourself a big favor and check out PV...it's one mighty good place to fish for 'em all, including those grande marlinas azul y negro.
Oops! That PV fleet I recommended is "Esperanza Sportfishing", not Manzanita. Talk with Kurt, who runs the fleet.
Sorry about that.
YOU RIGHT.. JOSH IS A HELLUVA FISHERMAN.. he puts a lot of information on this site and i would be damned if i let you tell someone he is to expensive and to try someone else..
opinions are like a-holes and i know that but you long drawn out posts that are full of nothing but bs is getting a little old.
jodh is an extreme fishermen and he is not for show.. he does this for a living and he does it well.. maybe it is you who need to slow your roll a little bit..
i checked into josh and his stuff is not to expensive..

HEY VINNIE!!!!! WTF.
Fred gave the guy his props and said that he was a helluva fishermen and that Raquel should not to be scared away by his antics. Now I have no idea who he is…. But if Capt Fred Archer says that he is a helluva good fishermen that is one great endorsement if you ask me.
He was adding some insight to this post and offered an alternative view on something. In no way did he disrespect the man. I don’t know about you but I always look at alternative products and services when shopping for anything. Now that doesn’t mean that he isn’t the best and not worth every dime he charges, which I’m sure he is. But not shopping around isn’t being an informed consumer and not the best way to spend your money.
Now YOU..... of all people are going to call him long winded???? Come on man, there is more info in one of his posts......
You know I like you, (and no I’m not a homo) and you add a lot to the color of this site that’s for sure... but you my friend, are jumping all over this guy for no reason at all. (in my opinion)
There are people on this site that have given Fred a hard time in the past for his views on how to do things and his self promoting, and it seems to me that you are jumping on the Hate Fred bandwagon. Why? Did he do something to you?
I for one am glad to see that he is finally posting again and now you’re going to chase him away with this crap? Why do you think he hasn’t been around in awhile?
I’m sure I’m not the only one on here that looks forward to seeing a post from Capt Archer. He has more experience then just about anybody on this board and I want to continue to see him share his vast knowledge with us. (Yes I am very selfish)
If you feel he is long winded and doesn’t bring anything to the table then just hit the ignore button and you won’t have to look at it.
Me…. I want to hear what he has to say. I, as a novice, want to hear all angles of how things can be done and then make my own decisions. Capt Fred Archer thinks outside of the box which I find very informative, and would like to continue to see things from his prospective.
Sorry Vinnie but I had to say this as I feel that you have just disrespected a legend in sport fishing without proper cause. Please show the man the respect that he deserves.
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
