For one thing, you don't have to swivel them around to reach the release clip, and for another, if you're pulling big planers, they put so much stress on the boom that I have had large booms bend. Just once, but that was enough for me.

Capt. Lyndon is tellin it straight. Short boom Penn's. Look at the commercial boats that have down rigger's. Bet I can tell you what brand they are. Functional, not fancy. Frank,SeaPower

Scotty's. Lifetime Warrantee. The Electrics are also top notch. Customer service is unrivaled. We have sold over 2000 riggers with zero returns.

When I have to put new ones on my boat they will be Walker downriggers with strike vision.
They have manual models that can be converted to electrics in the future.

Forgive my stupidity here .... the planers are new to me ... but why would you pull a planer from a downrigger?

I thought they both did the same thing and you either used one or another?

you can use a planer at higher speeds than a downrigger ball. wahoo and tuna fishing planers are better, and if you put them on the downrigger you can run a release clip and not have to worry about a bridle

If you are looking for a manual short boom it looks like the one on the left. I think there is a old salty hanging from it in the pic. I have a rod set up just for that position with 3/4 100# braid to a inline to 100' of 130 momoi to 130 spro to a mono or wire bait. Right where the braid meets the mono in the mono I crimp a loop that gets attached to the rubber band.

I like the short boom as well easy to reach and no flex.
