    Dominican Republic Charter Reccomendations?

Anyone have any leads on a good outfit out of Punta Cana? Going from the 11th to the 16th. Looking for a SERIOUS operation that can put us on some billfish.

I DO NOT want a podunk operation that drags spoons for cuda's all day while the mate beats off to my girl's fake boobs.

    Catch my drift?

    Unhappy

Wrong time of year, winter brings rougher colder water to Mona Passage and billfishing is so/so at best.

Might be some Sails or Dorado but the charter fleet that travels over from PR to fish during the summer isn't interested.

Not to hijack your thread but.....
What is the best time of year to fish there. I might have a shot at going to Punta Cana sometime this spring. I'm interested in marlin, but wondering about bottom/deepdropping. Any ideas?......Steve

I was there last Jan.for new years and thought about fishing, but I had lots of family there. I did not make it over to the marina to check out the boats and reports. When I got back, I found out from Capt. Brian at South Jersey Yacht sales that Tysons Pride was there and catching high single digits of white marlin and Yellowfin in the 125+ catagory daily. You may want to call down to the Punta Cana Marina to get a report. BTW, good trolling on the beach as well

I would take the ferry boat to Mayagueze PR...

spelling doesn't count here .. but there is a light tackle club there with plenty of boats. sorry no help for the dr main land though... take your own gear and lures and just point them where to go ... the mona passage is a great place to go but also has big waves sometimes.

Steve: How about Beaufort, NC in April? Supposed to be full of Yellowfin.

John; The Punta Cana trip is not a definite yet. I'm trying to keep all options open.

When are you going to MHC? I'm thinking about the end of January.

I have to find a date that agrees with Capt. Mike and with work.

    Keep me posted.......Steve

    hi guys,
sorry that i join this thread so late, but at least i can answer some points for future visits.
not been on the bords very often since last spring, hopefully that changes now.
wintertime(december, january and til mid february) here on the dominican east coast/punta cana/mona passage and north of Mona in front of Macao provides often rough conditions offshore, 5-6ft is usual and winds around 10knots are regular that time. present spezies are mostly the smaller dorado, wahoo and some sailfish. in case of sailfish i want to add that we never have them in big numbers like known from other caribbean destinations, we get them several days in a row but we also pass several days in a row without a sail in the spray.
whites and even blues can get caught all around the year, but not in numbers. the big numbers of white marlin are present mid march til end july, during that time we get double/tripple and + hitters, you just have to drop more baits back after the first white striked, don't stop the boat when the first is hooked, it is typical for shallow water billfishes like white marlin that out of the group one strikes first and the rest stays back first, once attracted to the spray they come up even right at the transom of the boat. blue marlin time starts june, best months are mid july til end september. for those deep water spezies the mona channel is good byt not the top spot on the coast, they are present in bigger numbers and larger in size north of the channel off Macao, just 15-30nmls offshore, for that reason i run my blue marlin 10hrs charters always from the sportfishing club in cabeza de toro where i live myself anyways, instead of the much farer south located marinas Punta Cana or Cap Cana. not neede travel time is more fishing time.
last week we had completely wuiet offshore conditions, no wind, Sea very low, but up on it's usual winter level again since yesterday afternoon. it is not everyday rough, but til end february you should expect that Sea may run a 5-6ft at least. the flat calm days anyways do not provide the best fishing conditions, current hits, weedlines and feeding birds are the spots to watch out for when fishing now for dorado, wahoo and sail. from january on the dorados are going bigger and bigger every week, yesterday 3 out of the dozen been over 30lbs'ers, during white marlin season the dorado bycatches provide huge bulls and females of 50+, great on light trolling tackle. i use preferably shimanos 20 and 25TLD's and Intl's 20-30lbs. only during blue marlin season they need to get replaced by the shimano 70's and Intl 80's.
fishing near the reefs for smaller spezies on spinning gear and even flygear is not bad, a lot of variation around, but i do not have a smaller boat operating on such since last spring. i want to bring my 29ft'er back from the south for that, but still in use down there by a buddy of mine, so no date or such set. due to Sea conditions such should anyways been done during March-end July, that's the fully calm time of the year for the dominican east coast.
hope that helps to answer some Q's
    Mike
