Wireman is right,
and that's not only for Punta Cana, it is the same for the whole Island.
we practice catch & release here at the Punta Cana Marina but that is not the usual way on the island, still, sorrily, but times are thanks god changing.

Fished Punta a few years back on honeymoon on 37 Rybo called RDA. A beauty of a boat. Booked it through southfishing.com. Great people to deal with and they arranged all the transportaion as well.
I've also fished with BIOPSEA who will be in Casa in a month after his trip to Isla. Awesome boat and awesome Capt.
Heard through the grapevine today that the local commercial guys in Casa de Campo are looking to pull their FADS this coming season so a ton of American crews don't camp out there. They don't want it becoming an American playground every season. Sounds like quite a few boats are heading there so I hope it's not true for their sake. Best of luck to those who go.
the reason for those checks is a legal one:
none of those american boats has a permission do fish here comercially/with paying customers, while local outfits like myself spend 25-40K in import taxes per boat to get it's Dominican papers/Flagged and several K's$$ a year for the tourism papers renewed to be allowed to fish comercially. of course it would be bad if some boats from the outside could promote their trips and run their business without paying all needed papers to legally do so, why we over here have to pay all that stuff.
the rules have to be the same for all boats, i operate myself 2 puerto ricon boats here at the punta cana marina and during billfish season i work also together with my puerto rican friend Frank Anderson and his 32ft Alemarle, to be allowed to do so cost's a bunch of money, i.e. the 33ft Proline Express, build in 2004, costed alone 26K$$US for the import tax to get the dominican flag.
on the other side i don't think US laws would allow a Dominican/foreign sportfishing boat to come over to Miami and run a business from there without any paper work aso.
get all the big ones

I am going down in Feb 8-15 At this time Mike Fisher is who I am going to book thru.Anyone who wants to hook up let me know.
JTrain986 I will post a report when I get back.I will do an 1/5 Day with mike or more.Squid nation who are the American boats who are there now.
Fished Dominican in March 2 years ago. Caught sailfish and barracuda, which the boat kept and there wasn't any ice. Wasn't real happy about that but the country is so poor you could see why they kept it. The boat was the Pulga with capt. Alex 809-883-1251. They fish out of a private Marina in Punta Cana near Higuey. Gran Azul is the company the boat is with.juliocbatista@yahoo.com.ar is your contact number. Alex spoke good English and the tackle wasn't bad, however they could use some spreader bars and some new lures. They would love you if you brought them some because they are so poor.Country is beautiful. They do a leg of the WBS so I would check when it is and plan around. The fishing grounds are 10 min. out of the marina. Capt.Charlie,Tranquila Sportfishing
