    dink rods...

i know this has been brought up a lot and i have to ask again.. i know the calstar 700m is a good rod for the dink and for white fishing and such...

but has anyone ever used or layed hands on a cape fear live bait series!?

that have a decent tip which is a little light but the back bone on these rods is absolutely unsurpassable to anything i have ever picked up..

i own two of them already and was thinking about getting a few more over the winter one at a time but wanted to know if anyone had any take on it!?

Cape Fear is no longer in business.
Do you have a source for their blanks?
I agree that their blanks are very light and very powerful.

right before they went out of business, they added a some fabric to the blanks. it made them a little heavier.
i think they were having a breaking problem.

just be carefull if you do buy them.

Hey Woim. An old pal, Raiford Trask, used to be the prez of Cape Fear. The manufacturing process was originally developed in Australia. Raif provided us with some of the rods and we fished them hard down in Cabo as casting and pitch bait rods for striped marlin, sails and dorado. Light, tons of backbone, very nice rods.

But they all broke - every one of them. It was the transition between the stiff "ribs" and the lighter ones that did them in - a potential weak spot in any rod design that was apparently even more of a challenge on the hex rods than conventional ones. We actually started making neat little hand gaffs out of the butts.

Up to you what you want to do about this, of course, but considering their track record, I would tend to hang 'em on a wall or store them somewhere safe because one day they will become collectors' items and probably be worth a lot more than they are now. Same thing happened with our heavier action BeastMaster Fightin' Rods, except they are almost impossible to break and those who collect them fish with them. For example, one of the editors of Salt Water Sportsman Magazine owns six of them and fishes tarpon with them.

I wonder what happened to old Raif? He was a for-sure Southern boy and one of the neatest guys in the tackle business. Damned good fisherman and writer, too.

The model shown below was a very powerful "stump puller". THE one for most fishermen was the model 1655.

    Good luck finding some.
