I have my wife's old kodak DX6490 and got her the faster firing Z712. The kodak easyshare system for your pc is easy to learn to use and produces pics as good or better then the rest from a standard laser jet printer, plus you can sign up (for free) to deal with kodak's lab and support. This one was taken with the slower camera durinf nor'easter

I am using Canon G4 digital camera and I am very happy with its performance. Recent models, G7 or G8 should be much better.
Here are some pictures I took with G4 in Fiji.

I just got an Olympus. It's waterproof down to 10 feet deep and shock proof if you drop it no more than 5 feet high. Perfect for on the boat as things tend to get bounced around. Pictures are great. They also make one that's waterproof down to 30 feet deep in case you want to hop in the water for some shots

Pretty expensive, around $600 with all the crap you need, but it has EVERYTHING the DSLR's do and more in one body, plus night vision, image stablization, 15X zoom, 4000 shutter speed, movie mode, etc... super easy to use.

    DIGITAL CAMERAS

I have over 20 years working in photography and work in NYC selling high end ($30,000) still cameras to the professional and semi-pro market. For point and shoot and SLR the best performance will be Canon & Nikon. I've noticed the new Olympus and will most likely get one of those for my own use and a Canon 40D for a higher end. The point and shoots have to perform more calculations for the focus/image quality thus the lag time. In order to avoid that you'll need to look at a SLR digital. Tough part is they are really not made for the saltwater environment so caution and cleaning is a must. Saltwater intrusion or dropping the camera on the deck will not be covered under any warranty and if you're able to slip it by consider yourself lucky. If anyone needs any help please feel to contact me. These are some of the other cameras I've looked at to bring offshore, let me know what you think.

Thanks for all the input, I chose to purchase the Nikon D40x SLR with the 18-135 lens package and a 1GB-133 sd card. I'll be in Jupiter Beach next week and will experiment and try to post the results
