    Deep Wtaer Fluke rig

Those that fish off of southern NJ DE and MD know of the Old Grounds. Its a deep water trench that runs out of the Delaware bay down off the coast of DE. Its deep where sometimes 12 to 20 oz are needed to get to the bottom. The trench has depths of 60 to 100ft, There are ballast stones from the old sailing ships that they would dump over board to lighten up for the trip up the bay. Well with all the structure it can be a big fluke Haven.

The Rig Known as the Old Grounds Rig Consists of 36 inches of leader a three way swivel. 2 mustad offset black octopus hooks snelled in tandem one bead and a Mckala or B-2 Glow in the Dark Squid. Baits can be Long strip baits whole squids or smelts.

The one thing I do with this rig is attach my sinker with copper rigging wire to keep it as a break away if it gets hung in the bottom. A sharp tug and the wire gives free and you don't loose the whole rig.

    Timmy,

I never did well with that rig. Then again, I never caught a 10 lb flounder. I dream about it every night this winter. I got the spot picked out........I just need to dream it, and it comes true. I will not be using that rig. Too Pedestrian.

Also try the B2 squid w/o any weight on a 30" leader on a 3-way swivel. On the other leg of the 3-way swivel tie a 6 oz Spro on a 12" leader.

Thats a torpedo bead not a weight between the hooks and the squid, not sure if you were implying that or not just wanted to clarify. The bucktail can be very effective also.

Alex, come on Big Baits big fish buddy and what the hell does to "Pedestrian" mean anyway? Oh Well it's all Greek to me.
Shadow George showed me that rig although he used small rubber squids on it and they were green. But when I had them made more people bought the biger squids on them. I took that rig to Dan Blackman of Blackies tackle to get him to make them for me

How many of you slow troll for flounder? If you are trolling, how fast? If not, how much drift do you like.

I can be an impatient sob when searching out new flounder territory in the ocean. It seems to me that dropping some weight and dragging some baits will work rather well to cover territory.

Does anyone use a downrigger w/ a rubber band or release clip to get their flounder rigs nice and deep?

We spend alot of time at the OC,TI,WW and CM reefs....and we do pretty good with fish to 8lbs a few times each season......oddly enough our biggest flounder was caught at mid day on 4th of july weekend in 10' of water on a squid and minnie....37" 11 lbs. Since I have a bait pen at the dock now I am going to try some different live baits when we are fishing the inlets and the reefs. By the time the spot show up flounder season is pretty much closed, but the surf is infested with small king fish.....a bubbler and a bucket should get them from the beach to the dock.....if they die, they will make a pretty strip bait either way.
