when the yellowfin are down deep and won't come up, what's the best way to add some weight to your live baits, but without the fish seeing it on your leader and turning away?

I just rubber band a weight maybe 20 ft or so above the swivel and send it down. Man thing is to send it down slow so it doesn;t spin as much and get all messed up. Never had a problem with that way, others go direct inline with a egg sinker and have no problems. Don't think the weight really bothers them as much as the leader size.
The reason they have said to drop it slowly is the sinker will fall faster than the bait and it will wrap aroung the main line above the sinker. So when they say slowly it means really slow. At night I don't think leader size means as much as when the sun comes up and is overhead. Then go as light in leader test as possible, but don't forget to reset your drag to compensate for the lighter leader. 30 pound leader drag should be set for about 5 to 8 pounds.
