What's the story behind that day where nothing went catastrophically wrong but all the little things lined up... stupid mistakes, lousy crews, stuff that made you wish you had skipped the trip..
Me, first that comes to mind was a day looking for bluefin this summer. Ran to the spot where they had been numerous to find nothing. Ran around to the close spots and found the same, just sporadic marks so out went the trolling gear. The crew was mostly beginners, myself and the owner who has experience but was dog sick that day. We picked around pulling a couple mahi until I left a newbie at the helm while I tended the lines. A coupe of turns made tighter than advised and we've got 8 lines tangled and trailing behind the center console. Clear the mess and back on the troll we go as I finish re-rigging everything.
Next thing I know there's a pot buoy bouncing down the port side and soon we're hooked up tight to it. No problem, we clear the lines and circle back to pull off the lure. I grab the hi-flier let loose the lure and bang instead of going backwards away from the pot the guy runs us up into it beats the hi-flier off the side and me and proceeds to run over the line. One jumping daisy chain wrapped into the outboard till she stalled.
One swim and a pile of hacked 200lb mono and the motor is back in shape. No sooner than things are cleared though someone pushes the throttle forward and gets the loose line left from mess one into the other prop. another swim and another 50 yards of mono out of the outboards. From this point on we did very little and headed home early.
It's normally a good crew but some folks brought some friends and chaos ensued. So what's your story of the day you never should have left the dock...?
