Anyone know why all of the west coast boats have bow rails? Seems a little strange that they all have them- there must be a good reason. Anyone know?

They have bow rails because they do a lot of sight casting to stripeys on the surface from the bow with live bait--you'll also see a lot of boats with livewells up on there for the same reason. It's a pretty cool way to catch a marlin for sure! |

I knew there had to be a good reason, thanks Swami! Have you ever done that kind of fishing? Like you said, it must be such a cool way to catch a marlin.

Swami pretty much nailed it though as here on the west coast the vast majority of our fish are either tailers, feeders or sleepers, although it would be safe to say most are generally tailers. There is alot of both running and walking up and down along the rails when baiting a fish, and as Swami said all the serious west coast marlin boats are equipped with a bow bait tank, and the boats will normally have two baitcasters rigged and ready up on the bow for when the opportunity arises. Once the first designated crew member tosses a bait on a sleeper/feeder(s) or tailer(s), he will then proceed to walk back along the rail while the next caster gets up in the pulpit and fires away. Many times we will get double and tripple hookups with the fish eventually going in complete opposite directions (one of the bow & the other off the stern), not to mention even if only one fish is hooked up we still many times end up moving from the bow to the cockpit area. I personally could not imagine fishing a large sportfisher without having a bow rail for fighting large fish, its invaluable IMO. Love the updates that they had going, but wondering where they are at today? I dont know if it's acceptable for me to relay anything I possibly hear or if I would be stepping on anybodys toes. Certainly dont wamt that, but I also know there may be quite a few who really like keeping tabs of whats happening in this tourney. I for one normally fish this as well as the past others, but due to situations I could not fish it this year, so trying to keep up with whats happening is killing me, as I have numerous buds fishing on various boats in this Hateras Classic right now. By the way, very nice site you guys have here |

MikeYP thanks for the detailed explanation of west coasting...it's amazing to me that the fishing tactics are so different from one coast to another. It must be so cool tossing livies to finning fish on the surface...the hook up must be so visual.
