PIRATE'S COVE BIG GAME TOURNAMENTS ANNOUNCE 5th ANNUAL DARE COUNTYBOAT BUILDERS CHALLENGE RESULTS

Manteo, North Carolina - Pirate's Cove Big Game Tournaments and the Dare County Boat Builders Foundation announce the results of the 5th Annual Dare County Boat Builders Challenge that took place July 17 (registration) and July 18 and 19 at Pirate's Cove Marina. Fishing was cancelled on July 20th due to anticipated offshore conditions caused by Tropical Storm Cristobal.  A total of 18 boats from Dare County, Virginia Beach, Morehead City, Ocean City and beyond enjoyed a cash payout of nearly $35,000. A total of 38 billfish were released during the event (1 Blue Marlin, 7 White Marlin and 30 Sailfish).

This years tournament was a great sucess. The tournament raised over $50,000 for charity.

For those not farmiliar with the tournament. It all started back in 2003 when the commnity learned that a good friend and colleague on the Outer Banks faced a very serious illness. Taylor Harrison, a talented and respected boatbuilder, was losing his battle with cancer and members of the Dare County sporfishing family were devastated.

Soon after Harrison's death, friend John Bayliss and Mike Merritt discussed how they could help Harrison's two teenage children, Mallory and Alex, with their educational expenses. Merritt suggested starting a scholarship fund that was funded by an offshore fishing tournament featuring boats built in Dare County.

Today the foundation is supported by local and national businesses and individuals who believe that everyone should have the chance to further their education beyond high school. Each year, the foundation will award financial aide and assistance to those who apply and qualify.

Cool Dare County Boat Builders Challenge

Congrats again Chris and Fin. You guys are hot!

Good for Arch and most of all them Paul Mann Boats.

Too bad they called fishing for Sunday- it was beautiful- specially for a PM boat. We were one of those left at the dock with another day to fish. Oh well-

Lots of $ for the Charity and food was real good.

I'm interested on thoughts for how the actual tournament was held, as far as awards presentation, food/drinks, entertainment, Captains meeting and such. They really blew the OI Tuna Tournament and I"m looking to see if they are improving...any thoughts appreciated....Bob

I never attended any of the functions for the tuna tournament, but for the builders challenge, the food was great all three nights, great trophies, overall Id say they did a good job. Be patient with them it is all new organization on the pirates cove tournaments

    Bob

I would agree with Chris. We didn't play in the Tuna event so I can't comment. But the dinners were very good and on time at the Callenge.Trophies were real nice.

A last minute rule change was made to allow the rules to be consistent with previous years. Another positive.

Biggest mistake was relying on the local sheriffs suggestion to cancel Sundays fishing on Sat due to the threat of a tropical storm that really never effected Manteo.

    Captain's choice is just that.

The new guys are really trying hard and listening. PCBGT will be the true test. I have found that Harry is very receptive to suggestions and comments.
