Dacron or Spectra for Wind On Leaders

I have searched the other posts and didnt seem to find too much. My question is who uses Spectra instead of Dacron for wind-on leaders and top shots?

Currently I use Dacron a bit bulkier but I can get Dacron in 500 yard spools of 140lb to 850lb, I cant find spectra over 250lb.

Who uses Spectra instead or what are your thoughts?

I have never seen spectra in anything heavier than 300. If you use interlocking loops to connect your wind-on to your main line be careful, the spectra can cut right thru mono.

Thats good to know, as far as the serve goes, I was looking to use Spectra or Kevlar thread to finish off the connection.

Any thoughts?

The fears with Spectra are starting to make me think I should just stay where I am at with the Dacron. If anyone needs Dacron, I am willing to split the actual wholesale cost so that it doesnt just sit around, I will be ordering more next week. The cost is $.04 per foot for the 250lb and $.05 per foot for 450lb. Just PM me if you are interested and I will get you what ever length you want.

I am glad I didnt start rigging Spectra and lose some nice fish, have you guys lost some large fish?

Never used spectra for WOs but would give it a try if some was available in the right diameter, I wouldn't be too worried about wearing through the mono with a triple loop to loop connection pulled really tight so it locks together. Spectra is slicker than dacron, so I wonder whether it would grip as well but it would probably be somewhat more hard wearing (although in use I find it's the waxed rigging floss half hitches that secure the point where the mono enters the dacron that wear out first).

Murph - that's a neat offer for the dacron, I might pick up maybe 100ft of 250 lb dacron and some of your OLC skirts, do you have them in 12" and 14" as well as 9 1/2" and smaller? I'm not really sure what's the application for 450 lb dacron, though - I've used up to 200 lb and you can run up some pretty heavy mono into that, 600 lb or so.

Patudo, PM me for the skirts etc, as for the 450lb Dacron - I have a few guys I know that insist on it. Personally I stick with the 250 and under.

I dont really want to know what they plan on catching with the 450 but I know they have a big boat.

That is a fear, not the fact.

Guys on the long range boats out of San Diego use exclusively hallow braided line for topshot and windon leader.

Spectra is harder to work with when splicing IMO, but I don't think you'll have a problem with it cutting through in those sizes. Like Kilsong said people have been using it for years.
