The original question here was "what makes a circle hook work"

Sorry I have not read all these post..but if people are still kicking the circle hook.....like fot White Marlin.....then I was in a few tournaments at St Thomas one day......12 strikes...12 hook-ups, White Marlin on 20 test...of course from the Dominican Republic to the Bahamas..to St Thomas and beyond to Ven..u...la they most all use snelled circle hooks....like the photo above this one.....not the this RR photo.......the snelled one.....I will be in a couple of tournaments this year....I will take some pics of their rigging. Thoes Venzuelian mates floss the snell hook to the med. bally's head.....and not Guacamoley style either....they like circle hooks...plain and simple......and as far as the long drop back when a White hits...like counting to 15.......thats too long per the tournaments I've been in.....when the white hits......4 or 5 seconds.....tops.....if the bait is not moving....he cannot find it, for a second hit.

You may want to read the whole thread I think we all agree that fishing circles on naked hoo's is easy and effective (hell, I won a billfish tourney last year fishing mostly circles on nakeds for white marlin). The debate here is about using circles with dead bait and lure combos, especially big lures with large heads.

As far as dropping back, do it enough and you will know when to lock it up...really need to wait until that fish turns with the bait, whether that's three seconds or ten seconds.
