It will run different than when rigged with a J hook traditional style. You can use floss instead of the mono but you are going to loose alot of Islanders.

That is about identicle to what we did during some of our tests. The problem was multi part. The fish wouldn't hold for a drop back long enough to be effective. We also had problems acheiving the performance from the lure design with the turbulence disprupting flow to the cup. The third and most critical problem was the barrel diameter of our bait is considerably larger than the gap of the hook. (Leads back to mouth prying open wider than the gap and can't set) ... Then there were questions as to IGFA compliance. The hook is not supposed to be "Free" outside lure. In front or behind...

I am with you until the last one deep although I have seen this setup work with a lil stubby. But on the IGFA thing, I think it would pass muster. It is no more loose the 90% of the ballyhoo circle hook rigs that are going on in central america and they have already been deemed legal.

At the meeting, Leach was looking at that rig and pointing out the hooks were too seperate from the lure for legal. It needed to be tighter. In our tests that we've been running ours were tighter to the cup but the physics of diameter to gap can't be overcome that easy. Now again you are mentioning fish responding from a geographic area where they behave different. We were 0-8 up north and 0-10 island side with that particular style on the boats I ran. The others also 0% in north atlantic... We're trying. Just no success to date. Overall we have pulled 0-108 billfish using circles in all kinds of ways on the tear drop combo over nearly four years.
We redesigned the back of the head to accept the hoo farther inside and I'm hoping that might help things. We're gonna give it one last good hard go at Chub this year. I can't in good faith continue to test during charters much longer, although the fish we're missing on the circles are readily taking pitched baits or "J" baits moved over into position in many cases.
You should be getting your package tomorrow and there are several teardrops in there. The new ones where we can get the head of the hoo further into the lure head. Feel free to go test with one or two.

What is the maximum distance the hook can be from the lure?

I don't know... As far as I've heard, its supposed to be touching. I may be wrong... That was just his comment at the meeting... Those were the lures rigged by the scientist who swore they were the answer until I found out they had not actually been tested...

Bill, since we had our little conversation in Venezuela about this subject, I have tried some experimenting. I think I have an idea that might work. I'll show you next time I see you.

I'm not talking about the retard pacific fish that you could catch on a cue ball.
Yeah right catch them on a cue ball. That I'd like to see. We use giant lures for giant fish, no 6 or 7" squids for white marlin and sails. The original question wasn't about white marlin.

I told you to show me a vid using concave hard head combo baits on whites. Thats where the regulation that affects my living is. If you cant show me that then put a sock in it !
What good is a video to you? It seems fairly obvious you don't want to see one, because you'll ridicule and pick it apart.

Where's the "block" on this message board so I don't have to read your garbage?

Hook length from lure

H. HOOKS AND LURES
1. When using an artificial lure with a skirt or trailing material,
no more than two single hooks may be attached to the line, leader, or
trace. The hooks need not be attached separately. The eyes of the
hooks must be no less than an overall hook's length (the overall length
of the largest hook used) apart and no more than 12 inches (30.48 cm)
apart. The only exception is that the point of one hook may be passed
through the eye of the other hook. The trailing hook may not extend
more than a hook's length beyond the skirt of the lure
. A photograph
or sketch showing the hook arrangement must accompany a record
application.

I HAVE BEEN CHASING A WAY TO MAKE THIS STUFF WORK FOR OVER THREE YEARS... LOT OF GOOD PEOPLE OUT THERE TRYING TO HELP TOO. THEY KNOW THAT THE TEAR DROP RAISES MORE QUALITY FISH THAN MOST ANY OTHER BAITS THEIR DRAGGING AND THEY WANT TO CONTINUE USING THEM. TO DATE WE HAVN'T HIT THE FORMULA THAT WORKS. WHATS YOUR F****** PROBLEM?
DO NOT TRY TO FEED ME ANY DRIBBLE ABOUT THE BLACKS OR STRIPES REMOTELY HAVING ANY SIMILARITY TO THE WHITE. I DON'T DEBATE THAT THEY ARE BIGGER AND STRONGER, ALONG WITH A COUPLE THOUSAND BLUES THAT HAVE COME TO MY TRANSOM. I HAVE NO LOVE FOR THE LITTLE WHITE PECKERS. IF ANYTHING I HAVE CONTEMPT FOR THEM. UNFORTUNATELY THATS THE TARGET BILLFISH THAT THIS RULING IS ABOUT. I CAN DRESS THE TEARDROP WITH A BIGGER HOOK TO DEAL WITH THE BLUES. BUT THIS IS ABOUT THE WHITES THAT HAVE THE MULTI MILLION DOLLAR BOUNTIES ON THEIR HEADS.
SHOW ME A TAPE OF SOMETHING WORKING ON THEM WITH THIS TYPE LURE AND I'LL USE IT. I SAW PITCHES BAIT AND EXPLAINED WHY THAT DIDN'T WORK WITH OUR BAIT IN PRACTICALITY AFTER THE TESTING WE DID. I WANT MORE THAN ANYONE TO FIND A WAY TO MAKE THE BEST BAIT OUT THERE USABLE SO I CAN GET SOME OFF MY SHELVES AND SO I CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE DROPPING $15,000 PER EVENT AND FEEL WE STAND A BETTER SHOT AT WINNING THAN THE NEXT GUY...
