The idea of catching a billfish, being a stupid pacific sail or a harvard graduated atlantic white marlin is not the question. Rigging a Jr or ilander or other lure with a circle hook in front is rather simple and effective. I have seen it happen myself and no I don't have video nor do I need to provide it to know that I have done it. The question is how do you rig said lure with a better then 50% chance of still keeping the lure after the fight. I am all ears CR Sportfishing, please help me out. Always wanting to learn from this great site.

In relative terms thats exactly what I'm saying there is no comaparison betweeen Atlantic and Pacific fish. Even regionally here our whites here and in the Bahamas are far easier fish than the ones in the north east. The fish I dealt with in Quepos, Bahia pez vela, Puerto Vailarta, Alcopulco... All shared a very eager nature. You could make several mistakes along the way and still get a hook up with little problem.
The white marlin in the northeast USA, the target of the circle hook ruling are far quicler and more finicky by far than any Pacific fish I have seen. Their habits are 1000% different. There IS NO COMPARING THE TWO.
I have stated before that I'm perfectly willing to try something even try something that has failed before. It behooves me and how I feed my family to stay cutting edge... Show me a tape of a broad hard resin concave face combo bait being used effectively with a circle for white marlin in the northeast USA and I'll jump right in. Until that time I will continue to press for their reclassification.

The circle hooks they approved arent true circle hooks they seem to have a longer shank. This one I use for Tuna would or would not be legal?

Bill what I did was crimped 80lb mono in a loop like you would have to attach a bally on the end of a teaser. The I rig my bally and slide the lure down over the head and secure it tight. Slide a crimp in front of the Islander and make a loop. Stick the hook in the loop and pull the loop tight around the hook and tight to the islander and crimp it. Let me know if anyone dosent understand and I will further explain. That is not the hook I use but it what I had at the moment.

thanks bobby - That looks like a winner. That is how we rigged a concave softhead but did not go the extra step of crimping that in the hook. I like it.

thanks

Pitch wouldn't that make the lure run differently? I have no clue about this stuff at all so I am probably asking a stupid question.
