Reply to 30mile line
I am sitting here w/Capt. John from Caveman Sportfishing who just got done spending all day rerigging all his geer for the SJ Midlantic Tuna Tourney. Asked him about fishing for tuna 30 mi out and plenty of small football size bluefin have been caught within 30mi of Cape May along w/spanish and king mackarel and false albies, but if you really want to catch the 70-100lb tuna you're going to have to go out to the 20fathom line, and further. The closest spot where you might have a chance for the 50-60lb tuna would be the 19fathom line which is approximately 40 miles from Cape May.
If you have any specific questions Capt. John said drop him an email or ask him here on the board. Good luck and we'll keep an eye out for your reports!

30 mile chunking
capt.,
there are a few good spots that produce quite well in the 30 mile area on the 20 fatom line. 19 fathom lump 36 miles e s/e of cape may inlet, 25 fathom lump 34 miles e of cape may inlet, south dump site 32 miles e s/e of cape may inlet, the cigar 35 miles e of cape may inlet 30 miles from townsends inlet, and sometimes theres even a chunk bite in an area inside 30 miles ( 20- 25 miles from cape may inlet the east lump).......there are less popular smaller lumps that very few poeole fish near the 30 mile limit that also hold tuna also get a good chart and your on your way good luck. capt. steve F.stop |

If your gonna run out 30, you might as well run out 40, to masseys or the fingers. You probley have a shot at bigger fish. Good luck.

Just wondering if you can chunk through the day or is first light the only real opportunity?

I'm sure its different up here. I don't know the area SW of NE. I look for the 30-ish fathom mark and anchor at the top-to-half way down the slope, depending on wind/tide. Since your chunking, aim before the slack IMHO. If the dogs show up, it's time to move. All of us have lost more tuna to f*king sharks. The BFTs will truck right past you. If possible, look for an upwelling with tides and check IMCS for thermals as this will gather and hold the natural baits when the tide goes slack. I'm sure the other guys here from your area would know alot better. Best of Luck!!

We have several spots just outside the 28 mile wreck/750 square area that produced between 40 and 48" in fish for us two weeks ago and they are still there. We trolled them.
In addition a buddy of mine lost a giant BFT in the area we were that they fought for 2 hours on 50# class tackle. He was chunking. Just becomes a nuisance sometimes with the bluefish to chunk in close. In skinnier water scale down your leader size for better results. |

Jay we also had simillar results as you the past couple of weeks a little further out at the claw. With our biggest being 42. But only had one fish this weekend but the two previous trips we went 11 for 11 and 8 for 12. But with the water temperature jumping up I was wondering are they just staying deep or did they move on? and also is it worth it to chunk in the day time or smarter to just run the rest of the way to the canyons? Just trying to learn as much as I can any help would be appreciated.
