Each year for the last 30 I have done trips to Chub Cay in the Bahamas... Most years we have had spots available for guests to join us and a couple years not...
The boss is making available our new 43 Viking express for some limited guest work this spring. I have firm comitments from some of you already. I'm not going to hold anyones feet to the fire right now but I'mtrying to get a feel for how many and who would like to join us?
We typically do five day legs... You arrive noon one day, throw the bags in the room and hit the ground running... We fish late that day. Then three full days. Then cap it off with a final morning. To uncomplicate things I put together a pretty much all inclusive package. We supply the fishing, air from Ft. Lauderdale (or perhaps even Nassau), lodging, soft drinks, lunches, snacks, a steak dinner, a fish fry dinner...
The fish are yours to keep. We clean, package and freeze them for you... Unlike our Bimini trips which are a bit more party oriented the Chub trips are for the hardest core of fishermen. Fishing is usually off the charts good there. In a good year we may do better than a hundred mixed marlin a month and even in bad years seldom do we go a day without at least raising a couple billfish.
The billfishing is great indeed but theres a lot more than just them to keep you busy. When the wind is right there are dolphin all over. Big oones with some running to 70 pounds. Its rare that we make it all the way to the "Pocket" and back without dealing with wahoo. They run big here. Most around fifty pounds but some as big as a hundred. Usually we are marlin fishing and they just clip us off but if you want to catch em just say the word and we can concentrate on them.
Mid day the bite slows so we break and go jigging for strawberry grouper. Enjoy some conch salad as you bounce jigs in the gin clear water for these tasty critters. A big red, black or yellowfin grouper may join the pile. Mutton and yellowtail snappers add to the mix as do the always colorful queen triggers...
Nudge our mate back at the dock and he can probably be talked into taking a couple at a time around the corner to some red hot bonefishing... For that matter, I could even be talked into it...
In the past we ran smaller Albemarles there but with the Viking we can expand our game to include six guests very comfortably... We have bridge deck seating all the way around and a mezzanine seat in the pit is being added... The larger softer riding boat will allow us to range farther on bumpy days.
The layout of the "pocket" is like a canyon. Shallow around the edges dropping off in places to 6000' feet just a couple hundred yards from the edge. We litterally drop our riggers at the marina entrance as the edge is less than a quarter mile... The pocket curves around in a way that its protected from heavy seas on most angles...
Our schedule is not set in stone yet but will be roughly mid March to mid May... Prices not fully locked in but an educated guess would be about $1750 a man for the full five days with most everything included...
Again not looking for firm comittment just trying to get an idea of who and how many might like to join us...
Also interested if any of you might be interested in shorter or longer versions of this trip. With generator aboard its possible we could add a sword drift or a night yellowtail run to each leg...
We could also opt for late afternoon tuna one day instead of keeping the pressure on billfish.
Working on finding flight schedules to Nassau from larger cities and make your connection out of there for quicker and more direct access...
These trips rae for you ... Let me know what we could do to make them better or more tailored to your needs...
Were thinking March through May... The pocket can blow hard but stays pretty calm because you have flats protecting it from most sides... In the albemarle 3-4' chop which sometimes did show up made things uncomfortable. With the Vike she doesn't wiggle even in the big stuff so we can go where we want when we want...
Most years we get a couple special days usually before a moon where it goes on fire all the way... 6 blues and two whites was a good day. 8 blues and six whites was a real stand out. Raising 16 whites in four hours was another special one. Double grand slam plus two whites was yet another... It doesn't happen all the time but if you get moon, tide, wind and no mass dolphin blitz all working in your favor its off the charts good...
