He's right on. If your looking for the bluefins up here, WWWWWWWWB is perfection.

Again just my opinion and way of doing things but it works for me.......

As far as the yellowfins go, OI boys pull spreader bars way way back, actually they build a wooden bird around the bar, this is the way they keep the bar from dippin under the water.

If anyone knows were i can find these birds let me know, I heard that a man buids them out of Wanchese but dont know how i get some.

    Thanks, shane

I run stuff down the center way back too but 300 yards is FAR. I mean lets put it this way....home plate to the left field wall in Yankee Stadium is 315...105 yards.

I would estimate we run our WWB for BFT 150 yds. max and have done really well. Works awesome on flat ass calm days when you can't buy a bite.

A simple tip to those who fish wwb with 80's and dont have a line counter, when the bait hits the water start counting, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.. up to 100 (slightly faster than 1 number per second), at 100 set it up and you are about 300yrds back. It worked within 30+-yrds everytime.
Damn, who's the poor ******* that get's to crank this one in, if it's me I hope there's not a 100+ tuner attached to it!!

Furthermore, i am gonna say that based on a bunch of different factors, will we decide how far back to run our WB line.

If its a calm day and/or the water is super clear, we'll run the WB line farther then usually. Boats spook fish, i don't care what anyone says.

If its a little bumpy and/or the water is not as clear we'll start with the center line in closer.

Last year we boated a 100# BFT in July on the 30 line. Water was green and bumpy. Nobody was doing anything, guys were running everything wwwwb. We ran everything in tight and left long rigger gone blown up. Boated the fish. 5 minutes later, right rigger gets bombed but the fish dropped off. People couldn't buy a bite that day either.

Whenever possible you want your spread to look like a big school of bait.

Interesting thread and got me thinking. Even with the rigger clips tightened to the max how does a spreader bar way back on the shot gun stay in there?

As far as the bluefin WTFB statement goes he is right on the money. I don't know if the extra line gets the bait deeper or the fish don't like the boat but when we bluefin troll 20-45 miles off Jersey our shot gun and long riggers are all a country mile back and all sport blue/white Ilander Med-Large ballyhoo. It is a pain in the balls to reel in though but if that's the only way I'm gonna get a bite that ***** is going back!

This reminds me of a time my buddy was asking a guy at the marina what he got his bluefin on. He was like did you have you baits way back? The guy was like you got line on them 50's? LET IT OUT!

You guys must have some boats that scare the living sh*t out of fish if you run them 150-200 yards back. My long riggers are about 60 yards if that and thats far. I can still see my baits from the pit on my long riggers.

Whats the point of fishing them where you cant see them? I mean i see maybe 90% of my bites and if they miss it which they do i feed it to them. Think of how many fish you are missing from running your rigs way back

Not knocking anyones fishing abilities or telling them to change something thats not broken for them just shedding some light on some different things.

Fish it in tight patterns and they will come

I see your concerns with the way way way the f--k back baits and it is a pain in the balls. But we are confident in our abilities to rig ballys that swim good and with a big ilander in front of the bait its helps it swim even better and as I'm sure you already know keeps it from washing out that fast. So seeing the bait is not really a concern unless there is weed on the bait and usually when that happens it will pop out of the clip or put a serious bend in the rod. In the canyon we will have a tighter pattern to try and get the doubles, triples and quad headers but bluefin fishing in the 20 fathom ranges is a completely different ball game. We rarely get doubles of bluefin and I am telling you if you had your baits in tight this year around the Cigar, 19 fathom lump, triple wrecks, lobster claw areas you would not get bites. Most bluefin we killed this year were on the shot gun half spool out with blue/white ilander ballyhoo.

We did fish the 19 this year and massys all bft in the early season and we had 100+ lb bft hitting and jumping right out of the water not 10-15 yards off the back of the boat. I think one bite came from the long rigger and everything else came from the shorts and closer.

Hey if you kill fish like that keep doing it but catching 6-10 fish by 8:30 in the morning or earlier when others caught nothing or one i'll stay with what works for us.

IN CLOS FOR YELLOW & BE WAY BACK FOR EARLY BFT

I use my two corner riggers and center rigger to run three JUST in back of my seven other spreader bars or five spreaders and two jetheads for YFT & BE. In the spring when the BFT are fineky, or when I am running my GS then I run way back in clean water.

    Good Luck, Mty
