Caveman Sportfishing 8/31 report
We took a group of 6 dedicated anglers on a make-up charter early am today but the old saying of should have been here yesterday really held true today. All we had was one mystery bite trolling and chunking this morning. We had fresh peanut bunker plus sardines that we used chunking but never had a touch and we were out there with no other boat traffic and doing this long before daybreak and still no bites. We finished the day trolling with similar results. I talked to my other boats captain that fished up in one of the northern canyons yesterday and they got the tuna real good at night but only a few trolling and that is what I heard about our area today also. Every day is different when it comes to fishing. We have had a great last week of big bluefin fishing and had high expectations for today’s trip but it was not to be for us today.
We left the dock at midnight to get on the big bluefin before daybreak but we could not find any fish in the Elephant Trunk or inshore around the Misty Blue. All the food trucks that have been attracting these fish up to 300 lbs have now left the area and my best guess is the bluefin have moved north to find some new food sources. Yesterday (Thursday) we know of a couple of tuna that were caught that weighed 146 lbs and 181 lbs dressed out but that was yesterday. The 181 lb tuna took 4 hours on a 50 class outfit and I believe this as I have witnessed these fish pull line on a 130 class outfit with 35 lbs of drag.
We know of some new developments coming up for targeting these big slob bluefin and hopefully we will have at least a few more opportunities fishing for them this season. We had a second trip scheduled for this afternoon but cancelled it due to lack to fish.
