CAST NET HELP...
I have been checking the local docks and all around the back bays with tons of peanut bunker, spearing and all loads of other crap everywhere and i am tired of looking at them but i need an all around cast net to net them..
i need something with good enough weight to get down also on adult bunker pods in october and november in the boat when i live line them... trying ti figure out who makes the best and where to get it from.. the local shops around here all carry some brand in a small greenish see thru box and only 6 footers. i need something that i can get all around use out of preferably a 8ft opening to 16' or even a 6 opening to 12'.. either one.. what brand? what kind of weight? what size mesh? and anything else i should look for.?!? |

Your talking about two diffrent nets.
One for peanuts and one for adults. Go to the best of the best. He is in Staten Island but well worth the trip. He won't let you leave untill you can open it like a champ. Percy is a great guy and I spent all afternoon with him one day just shooting the shit. I couldn't throw a net to save my life and after my lesson with Percy I was opening a 20' net everytime. Check him out, you won't be sorry http://www.percycastnets.com/

Second the percy net comment.....
It is amazing how many of his orange commercial baskets you see riding around Raritan Bay and Sandy hook when people are throwing nets for bunker.
I could not throw the net when I arrived in Staten Island; when I left I was better. After some practice in the back yard it is now much easier and better. The concept is very simple once the brain understands what needs to be done.

Vinnie,
We use Betts Cast nets. usually a 12 ft net with either the 1.4 or 1.7 lbs per foot with 3/4 or 5/8 mesh. If you are throwing in deeper water you want a net that drops quick or else the menhaden will swim out from under. When we catch bait it is usually rigt off the beach in anywhere from 10 to 20 ft of water. We have caught some in 35 ft of water but i let the net go down about 15 ft then pulled it in real quick to close the net on whatever was in there. Still caught about 25 pogies but we don't like throwing in deep water. I recommend the Betts nets. |

Percy Nets
For adults, there is no question this is the way to go. Have had it for a month and watched the dvd only. Put it this way, my bait pen is always full, often after only one throw. Great guy too. Have not had a chance to throw this net at peanuts... but will report back

IF YOUR THROWING FOR NUTS OR MULLET A 6 FOOTER WOUDL BE FINE, THERE ARE MANY DIFFERNT BRANDS I PREFER BETTS. NOW THE DEEPER THE WATER YOU ARE THROWING THE HEAVIER THE WEIGHTS YOU WANT. I PERFER AN 8 FOOT NET HOWVER. IF YOU ARE LOOKIGN FOR ADULT BUNKER I WOULD GET A 12 FOOT NET.

I'm on board with Percy. The guy is the nicest guy on earth. I have bought two nets from him and I can't say enough about them. The first net I bought had a huge hole in it when I got it home and he took it back with no questions asked. Everyone is right about him not letting you leave until you can throw it, It was definitely worth the ride to SI. He is going to be at the show in Edison this weekend. If you want to learn how to throw a net it is a must see.
