Casa Vieja Fleet fishing reports, Guatemala

This year the sailfish bite has been below average. Historically the bite averages 21 raises per day but we have been averaging 10. Most think it's because of the El Niņo. The water temp has to break soon and when it does the anglers who are there are sure to see another record breaking release on sails.

One unique occurrence has been the raise count of marlin. Marlin are not unusual in Guatemala just not a significant number like the Pacific Sailfish. The Casa Vieja fleet (4 boats) has raised over 30 marlin (blues, blacks, stripes) in just less than a month. With all the other local captains I'm sure this number would raise significantly.

Because of the weather, when the water temps change, the fishing action should go for a longer "season". I'm quoting season as sailfish are prominent year round in Guatemala, just more boats are fishing November through May.

There are still May dates available if anyone is interested in getting into some of the action.

Nice advert. Too bad the fishing isn't up to par. Last year was a record breaker - highly unusual. And, yes, more Marlin are being caught in Guat and El Salvador too. Water temps are off, but there's plenty of baitfish - Maybe after the full moon it will heat up.

    Guate's temps

I just received another fishing report from Golfito with Tommy Lynskey and it looks like the waters are soon going to change. Tommy stated in 5 days he had raised 87 sails. So let's keep our fingers crossed the water moves quickly to the west.

Last year there was green water in Panama for most of the season, this year the season has been gonzo! But, second week of Feb was a downer, green water came back in and killed it. 10 boats caught 22 billfish. One boat hooked one fish in the entire 7 days. The following week there were 77 bills caught, b/c the green water went bye-bye.
