Captain Chaos - Hot Dog to Poorman's...10/4/08

The Widowmaker and Joanee crew joined forces again with the boys from Schooner Island Marina to fish with Paul on the Captain Chaos this past Saturday. The plan was to do a day trip starting at the Hot Dog in search of the larger 100+ pound Bluefins and smaller Yellowfin and then work offshore to the 3 degree break on the 50 line of the Poorman's.

We arrived at the Hot Dog at first light and deployed the mixed bag spread of rainbow and green machine bars, skirted and naked ballyhoo. I don't think we had the spread out 5 minutes when we had our first False Albie on. After this we continued to get mauled by the Falsies so it was time to pick up and get out of there while we still had ballyhoo left in the cooler. The water on the Dog's looked good and was about 64 degrees.

15 miles later we arrived at the break and we were greeted with clear grey/blue 71 degree water. There were commercial boats and sport boats working the area and things looked good. After 3 baits are out Whitey comes up on the left short that was sporting a blue/white seawitch ballyhoo combo. Mcc teased him up and he finally took the bait. After a quick fight we had the fish in the boat for a quick couple pictures and a clean release. After that we had something explode on the shot gun black/silver chugger head but, the fish totally missed the bait. It just boiled on it like a larger Yellowfin would have but didn't pull off any drag. We continued to work this area and then something BIG blows up on the shot gun lure again. This time line is screaming off and multiple explosions are going off as the fish is taking off away from the boat. We didn't get a look at the fish but the crew narrowed it down to either a big Yellowfin or Wahoo. I personally thought Blue Marlin since the way the explosions looked but I guess we will never know. We were able to pull a couple Dolphin off some pots and missed another White and had other misses on the planer set-up and other baits throughout the day that only looked like smaller Dolphin.

We spoke with a few other boats working the area and it seemed like there was a good Wahoo bite there but we didn't have our chance. One boat had a Yellowfin and a 60 pound Wahoo, Black Dog had 2 70# Longfin and some other boats were reporting multiple bite offs as well as a few more Wahoo boated and even a Mako landed on the troll. I had my Wahoo arsenal out but I guess it just wasn't our day.

After working from the 50 out to the 100 and back into the 50 we picked up and ran back into the Dog's on our way to back to Cape May hoping to save the day with a Bluefin. We had Blue/Pink and Blue/White Ilanders with large Ballyhoo a country mile from the boat as well as the planer method trying to hook up one of these slob Bluefin but we only managed another gaffer Dolphin before we picked up and headed for the barn.

Thanks again Paul for inviting us!! To the rest of the crew it was fun fishing with you guys. Can't wait to do it again! Here are some pictures from our day.

Whitey and from left to right, Mcc, Tail Hooked Bill, Jvtuna , Brad, Lucky Dog Matt.

This guy said he didn’t hear much of a tuna bite out there either.

Sometimes you just don’t know when to quit as we watch the sunset on our way in from 30 miles off.
