    Cape Cod Insanity

Be Careful what you wish for …. It may hurt more than you think!

I was lucky enough to experience an amazing bluefin tuna feed this weekend. When the day was over I could barely lift my arms, I had striking pain but my face was still smiling from all the laughs shared with a great group of friends.

I would like to start by saying that Captain Chip, from Offshore Experiences is just an amazing guy. He starts early, is a riot to be around and is just plain fishy no matter where and what prey he is after. He has done an amazing job in an unfamiliar place and nderstands the game. The wind is always at your back and he always approaches the fish right. If you are chasing bluefin this year off Cape Cod you have three great choices with Rich, Dom and Chip.

    My friends

Good Lord, Shoe and Alex what a day. I had an awesome time whether it was drinking with cougars the night before, running around all day with a snowboard helmet and snowsuit bibs, attacking schools of bluefish or catching fish. Videos should be really comical to say the least

Dan, Alex myself and Chip met at Green harbor around 5am, looking for tuna love. We found all the signs immediately. Birds, whales and bait. Not a single boil or fish to be found. About midway through the day we decided to move to the deep and were rewarded when we approached a small group of boats that were casting to fish. Several of the boats were on the radio saying the fish wouldn’t eat but we were about to change all that. There were massive quantities of isolated schools of feeding tunas you just had to pick your school and start casting

Alex casted first was was immediately hooked up. He laid the wood to that fish in deep water and even though his stella was in bad shape he managed to land that fish. 30 minutes after hook up he had a FAT 67” bluefin tuna on the deck. Alex is a great angler but this style of fishing can be really technical and really hard on the body, not only did he learn it quickly but he did it with authority. Alex for a first timer you did amazing and should be proud of yourself. These fish are super tough, so tough that most anglers aren’t able to land their fish by themselves but you stuck it out fought like a champ and beat that fishes ass. On top of that you and shoe are too funny f**** guys

What happened next was just pure insanity. I hooked up on the next four consecutive casts/drifts I was blessed by the fish gods this day but they took no mercy on my body. Four full fights of about 20 minutes each with these demons in 400’ of water just down right beat my ass especially on a 8'6 rod

    Fish 1

We took a picture for a minute, cleaned the deck and then we went and found another school. I took a guess that blue was the color, Shoe lent me a Blue Dorado slider and it was a great guess. My first cast into the next school and I was tight. ZZZZZZZZZZ spool melting away I settle in and within 20 minutes we have leader on my spool for first fish but unfortunately while setting it up for a lip gaff hook pulled. We consider it a caught fish

    Fish 2:

I check my streamlined windon leader I have been testing for Roger (Pametfisher), looks great and I debated on casting so quickly after fighting but what the hell. I cast into the next school. Two pulls and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ tight again. I fight this fish like a champ for about 20 minutes and get her to leader, she sees Chips ugly mug and takes a dive straight down taking my rod tip down with it, I got careless for just one second and let the line touch the gunnel. GONE. Technically another fish on leader. I am beyond tired now and need a break but the fish are just everywhere

    Fish 3, the demon:

I once again cast into the next school and get bit immediately ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, initially this fish acts like a puppy. I tell Alex its small. I have leader in literally 5 minutes and then I hear from Alex … HOLY F’n shit bro its huge, chips looks at me and says it’s a biggun and on que it just rips off like 150-200 yards of line at ridiculous drag. I really want to take a picture with a fish so Im getting annoyed now and after like a 30 minute fight we see her again, leader is out of water she is circling tight and she runs deep I palm spool and POP. She bent a 300# split ring open. WTF. Strong Fish that came in quick but really kicked my ass bad. when it decided to go there was no stopping it. Palming spool, increasing drag none of it mattered.

    Fish 4:

I don’t have any more wind on leaders so as Chip positions the boat for another drift into the next school I tie a uni to uni. I wasn’t expecting another hookup at all. A fish picks up my sinking Baby runboh even though it lays motionless in the water ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ OMG I cant. I start fighting this fish and Dan offers to hook me up to his bucket harness. I wouldn’t normally but after 3 other fish I am more than happy to use it. 20 minutes later I have a 65 in the boat and my day is almost over.

    Fish 5: Glenn

Don’t even know why I casted, I was bored and put all my gear away and was really just thining this whole day out when I said why not. I cast and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Im tight. Fish takes about 100 yards and then its gone. It chewed through my leader thank god. I wouldn’t have made it through the fight

This was a banner day for all of us, the bite was hot and fun was had by all. Some Observations ...

Fighting Bluefin: We normally beat this fish real fast in shallow water but in deep water these fish are just pure power especially in cooler waters. You need a shorter rod and a good belt to settle into a vertical battle.

Wind on Leaders. I have been lucky enough to help test Rogers new casting wind on leaders. I have absolutely abused these things and couldn’t be any happier with the results. I know Dom has abused them as well. I once said wind ons weren’t good for casting my mind has completely changed on that

Colors: We reaized they were dialed into a blue shade, they wouldn’t eat anything else that’s why its always a good idea to have a big range of colors while casting

Chip Dan and Alex thank you for being such a blast to fish with and all the hard work you did I couldnt have had a better time

    TACKLE USED

Glenn: Shimano Ocea 86M Casting Rod, Shima no Stella 18000. Seven Seas & Shimano Stella 20000PG

Alex: Smith 80/35 and Shimano Stella 10000HG

Dan: Carpenter 56MH and Stella 18000

Hot Colors were Blue for stickbaits and leaders were 130 jinkai wind ons by Pametfisher
