Canyon Runner - Wrecked 'Em - Darn Near Killed 'Em - 27 for 28 on 50-60# Yellowfin - 4 Hours

Well it was about to happen anytime and Sunday was about that time. I’ve said for years – even wrote articles about it several times – don’t fish the calendar, fish the water. Well, the water’s been here for a month now. And with the water here we’ve been having very nice trips on everyone but one of the 20 canyon trips we’ve run so far since June 11. In fact, we’ve been catching between 6-12 yellowfin a trip all between 40-60 pounds – not to mention big-eye, makos, marlin and mahi. These are results on trips that we would have begged for last August-October. Well, now it’s really really good.

Capt. Phil Dulanie, Capt. Mike Zajac and Capt. Hook left the dock at 9am with the 60' Ritchie Howell Canyon Runner on Sunday with the Steve McManiman charter. There was a very nice bite in the Hudson Saturday on the West Wall so we headed in that direction. We put the lines in the water right a Noon – by 4pm we were done. 27 for 28 on 51 to 59 pound yellowfin (they weighed the biggest and smallest – the rest of the fish feel right in between).

Obviously with 4 hours of trolling catching 27 fish they were hitting everything. Our pattern included 4 Canyon Runner Spreader Bars and the rest of the rods were ballyhoo. The hoos did produce best though. We had basically constant action with doubles, triples, and quads the rule – the charter did great on the rods and the only fish “lost” was actually on the leader and an official release but we were trying to catch it. We boated a total of 21 and release 3 and tagged another 3 with special tags we’ve been given by NMFS. With the wind starting to howl at 20 knots and two of the charter a little under the weather they decided to pack it up and were back at the dock less then 10 hours from breaking the inlet.

To top this – our 2 boats are out there again and in the afternoon troll today on Monday they had 33 yellowfin by 6pm.

Below are pictures from the charter – nice job guys!!

Great job boys. I'll bet Capt Zajac was busy trying to fit all those fish in the box. Keep up the good work!

Thanks guys! Believe it or not it's even better. Both boats got back today with 33 yellowfin on one boat and 31 yellowfin on the other. Just to be clear thought they are actually releasing (and tagging) a number of these fish and not keeping them all. Full report to follow once I get pictures.
