    Canyon Runner Sail Report 1/12

Running our charter on the Big Boy with Captain Jason and mates Rudy and I. We guided Rich and Joe to a great start at their first sail trip ever. We started were we heard of a bite the day before, off the boca hotel. The first hour was quite but around 8:30, we hit 170 and had our first bite. We came tight and the sail was jumping all around. We quickly got a release and set up again. Working our way out, we picked up a double header in 190'. We jumped one off and released another. We set up again and in 220' we had sails slashing everywhere through the baits. We hooked 4 and had joe and rich fighting fish while the other two were screaming to the horizon in the rod holders. We headed towards Joes fish because his was the closest, unfortunaly it was in the opposite direction of Rich's. Rich held tight, but as soon as the spool got dangerouls low the line broke. He quickly picked up another and now we have three on. We release Joe's fish, release Rich's fish and Joe started working on the 4th. We popped the hook about 1ft from the leader...reorganized and set up in 190 again...we are now oficially 3/6. As soon as the tide turned the bite and the north current we had stopped and the sail bite stopped! We worked our way south hoping to run into the pods again, but no such luck. We got a huge bite on our long right kite bait just before noon, and put a 38# king in the boat. We ended the day with a 200lb hammerhead chasing our kite bait in circles at a fast pace and having him chew through the leader!

varieties of live bait...not really trolling, pretty much just holding ground and letting the current move your boat. Right now its goggle eyes, thats what has been available. But we also use threadfins, pilchards, ballyhoo, blue runners, mackeral and speedos!
