Canyon Runner Reports - Week of July 14 + Spearfish??? Picture

    60 Ritchie Howell Canyon Runner – 7/17 - 6 for 11 on 50-70 pound Yellowfin
Capt Mark DeBlasio and Peter Doran had the Pete Guaditis charter out Thursday and ran right to the Toms Canyon and started 2-5 miles inshore of the tip of the Toms and did not have a touch until 9am when they put their first yellowfin in the boat and it was a nice one in the 60-70 pound range. It was taken on a rainbow spreader bar. He worked that area all day and slowly picked away at nice yellowfin putting 6 in the boat and breaking off or pulling hooks on another 5. Most of the action was again on bars but ballyhoo are also starting to produce. The best bite was on the northeast corner of Toms right on the 100 fathom line.

    48 Canyon Runner– 7/15-16 - Toms (24 Yellowfin but only 7 keepers)

Capt. Joe T and Mike Zajac took the Rob Lowery charter back out to the Toms on the 48 CR and picked a couple small fish Tuesday afternoon only keeping 1 30 pounder and releasing the other. There night bite saw a decent sword fought right into the rudder and lost. They were drifting the Hendrickson and the 60 Canyon Runner was on the NE corner of the Toms for the night bite. In the early morning they trolled bank to the tip and working 2-4 miles NNW of the tip in 375 feet of water had another 22 yellowfin. Again there was very little quality to the fish with only 7 kept and all 7 were only 20-30 pounds. The rest were released. Trolling a 6 spreader bar pattern saw most of the fish come on bars.

60 Ritchie Howell Canyon Runner– 7/15-6 Toms 21 Yellowfin

Captain Mark DeBlasio and Peter Doran took out the Steve Roberts charter on Tuesday July 15 and headed back to the Toms Canyon. While the numbers at the top might sound good fishing is far from it. On the troll in the morning 2-4 miles NNW of the tip of the Toms Canyon in 375' of water they picked at yellowfin all morning. They brought 21 to the boat but only put 9 in the boat and only 3 of those were nice fish of 40-70 pounds. The rest of the 9 were 20-30 pounds and the rest of the 21 were shorts and were released. It was fun action for the charter and it was again all on spreader bars but not what we had been doing earlier in the month and all of June.

Below is a picture of what I believe is a Spearfish or Hatchet Marlin caught earlier in the month - can I get someone to confirm???

It does look like a large Spearfish. Any pics of the anal hole?

If it is its very big!! lol

I can not see it really good in the pic but normally spearfish have that dorsal fin that runs all the way the entire body!

I may be wrong but we caught the same thing last year and it was much much smaller but had the long fin down the back from just behind the head to just in front of the tail!

Either way that is sweet!! look at all the smiles with that thing!! WHAT A MAN!! lol

Good reports adam.. when you guys running again?

I think that it is a small blue marlin.

We all thought small blue except for the fact that the anal fin is very round and thus would eliminate a blue.

    It fought like a sailfish.

pacific slam blue/stripe/7 sails, 637# blue, spearfish off the teaser
looks like a spearfish.....but then again does it? i caught one 3 years ago in the Pirates Cove tourney. it probably weighed 35 lbs max and did have a dorsal that sort of tapered down and ran the full length of it's back. the one we caught also had really long, goofy looking pec fins. when he came in on the teaser we all thought it was a gaffer it was lit up so bright blue. the fish in your pic has a dorsal fin that seems to stop at his shoulders, not like a spearfish dorsal. Capt. Arch Bracher (Pelican) explained that he had caught a hand full of unidentifiable billfish over the last several years. If that man can't identify em, then what the hell are they? Marlin Magazine had an article a year or 2 ago that described a new possible species....maybe sort of a hybrid b/w a white and a spearfish?
