Canyon Runner Reports - Big-Eye/Sword/15 Yellowfin

Capt. Mark DeBlasio and Capt. Tom Kelly and mate Ty McGowan had the Todd Balestro charter out Sunday to Monday and ran right to where we had them Saturday on the west wall of the Hudson Canyon by the letters but working that area for hours only produced 2 yellowfin on Canyon Runner green machine bars. Getting a call from Capt. Dulanie who had just come into the Hudson at 3pm he ran up to the bombs and dropped them in just south of that area and immediately nailed a 3 bagged of nice yellowfin in the 50 pound class on bars and ballyhoo. Working that area until 8pm just before dark he got a 4 bagger of yellowfin and set up for the night with 9 nice yellowfin in the box. His night time was actually a little eventful as a 53 inch sword grabbed the sword bait down 200 feet and was quickly subdued and boated. Up on the troll in the morning he picked 2 more yellowfin again right by the Bombs and again on our spreader bars and ballyhoo and went home with 11.

Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac took the Jim Dale charter out Sunday morning for an overnighter and were running back to where we had them Saturday when they got a call from a boat in on the tip that had a nice catch Sunday morning on the troll so they turned up the line slightly and put them in at the Bombs. They were not trolling 10 minutes when they put their first yellowfin in the boat on a green machine daisy chain behind a bird and then got a double header of big-eyes putting a 130-pounder in the boat on a ballyhoo and pulling the hook on a 150-pounder 10 feet from the harpoon. That fish was on a zucchini tuna clone. They were all hooked in 550 feet of water just west of the Bombs in the Hudson Canyon. They also added another nice yellowfin on a Canyon Runner 6” rainbow squid bar shortly after getting back up on the troll. They worked over to the east notch and then back to the bombs and continued to read bait but could not get another bait and all they pulled the rest of the afternoon was another nice yellowfin ending the afternoon bite with 4 yellowfin and the eye-ball. At night they drifted right on those numbers and did not have a touch. Up on the troll in the morning they also struck out.

Northstar Sirius Weather Saved This Trip

For those of you that saw the last two reports of our trips on Saturday and then again Sunday/Monday we left out one very important point. We almost did not get them in due to the severe lightening storms we had but were able to due so due to our Northstar Sirius Weather.

For anyone spending the weekend in NJ, I am sure dealt with all those torrential thunderstorms Friday night on land in western and northern NJ and again Saturday and Sunday afternoon right on the coast. We were leaving Friday night to go off for the Saturday day trolling trip and almost cancelled due to the threat of severe lightening within those storms. However, we just turned on the Northstar 6100i with the Sirius Weather Package and tracked those storms inland and noted that they were not move towards the east to the coast but instead where moving due north so off we went. Once a few miles offshore I put the Sirius Weather on a radar loop and clearly saw the track of the storms was 100% to the north and that they were dissipating with the lightening strikes almost completely gone.

I was running out to the canyon that night side-by-side with Dave and Jimmy on the Jenny Lee and we were both worried about those storms but once the Sirius weather confirmed they were dissipating and I called those guys to let them know a sigh of relief was heard on both boats and we were both able to sit back and enjoy one of the nicest mid-night rides offshore with a flat sea and almost full moon. Without that confirmation, both of us would have had our stomach in knots the whole ride out worrying about those storms and may have in fact cancelled.

On the way in Saturday we again saw severe lightening storms right on the coast right over Manasquan Inlet. We could see from the weather loop on the Northstar 6100i that these storms were not moving this time and we were heading right for them. We again saw that they were dissipating and just slowed the boat down timing our arrival at the inlet for when the storms seemed to be going to die out. We were never hit with a drop of rain.

This similar scenario occurred Sunday around noon when we were headed back out for an overnighter. Again we were able to track the storms, know with 100% confidence they were not a threat to us, and get the trip in.

We can’t say enough about this weather package and neither can our charters who almost had their trips cancelled – no one likes lighting and the system helped us avoid it.
