    Canyon Runner Reports 8/15-19 - 4 Big-eyes

Capt. DeBlasio had out the Ned George charter Friday to Saturday and trolled the east wall of the Hudson the entire afternoon and produced one skip jack. At night right on the 100-square they did have a little action pulling the hook on a nice sword after 30 minutes, landing and releasing a white marlin and boating a 125 mako. In the morning at they hooked 3 big-eyes on Canyon Runner spreader bars, ballyhoo and green machine and boated 2. One was 172 pounds the other around 160. That was all the action they had on the troll.

On Saturday to Sunday Capt. DeBlasio had out the Steve Wiggins charter and arrived at the Hudson Canyon around 6pm. They trolled for 1.5 hours but to no avail. On the chunk at night if you close your eyes and look around that is what they caught - zero. Up on the troll in the morning there were about 50 boats right on the numbers so the good big-eye bite did not materialize. They scratched and clawed all day and pulled out 5 yellowfin on the troll but only 3 were keepers up to 35 pounds.

We cancelled Sunday/Monday’s trip due to the lack of fish and went our Monday/Tuesday with the Scott McCloughan charter who knew exactly what to expect but wanted their shot at big-eyes – they got it. They left the dock at 10am Monday and worked the entire east wall of the Hudson finding big-eyes again at 100-square hooking a single that got tail wrapped and broke off and then immediately thereafter hooking a double. Two of the three big-eyes ate our Canyon Runner Green Machine Bars and I believe the 3rd ate a ballyhoo. The bites came around 6:30pm. They did absolutely nothing at night and came home around an uneventful morning troll. Back at the dock the big-eyes weighed 203 and 175.

I know there are long hours, lots of effort and plenty of $ involved in these trips. I also know that the CR crews are accustomed to bigger catches over the years, BUT I think that BEs, makos and sword are definitely worth taking a shot at!
Great catching under poor fishing conditions!

Thanks but I'd trade every big-eye we caught this year and last for the yellowfin to show up on the chunk.

I have a bad feeling it is not going to happen at all this year.

    Adam,

Great Job on the Big Eye.

I know there's been a lot of talk already on this, but what's your guess as to why the YFT aren't showing this year.

    Thanks

Thanks - funny thing is that to date it has been our best early canyon season ever for us as we got in 53 canyon trips between both boats so far and caught close to 600 yellowfin with 450 of them were 40 pounds or better. Not to mention the 3rd Place White at the WMO. But I think we peaked early this year. I guess next year we'll start booking back-to-back canyon trips in May!!!!!

The reason is simple - we had a great early season eddy that pulled the right water onto the shelf and the fish were in it. Now there really isn't any good water on the edge to hold great quantities of fish. Yes there are still pockets of fish (e.g., the big-eyes) and there are yellowfin that will be caught but there is no major body of water holding a major body of fish to sustain any decent fishing in the long run.

However, and this is what has us scratching our heads, those big-eyes are here for a reason and there are plenty of them. Logic would have it that the yellowfins or longfins should be feeding on the same stuff the big-eyes are eating so maybe just maybe they show up.

cant win the game unless your in it. Still a good report and catch. not to many seasons ago, green water which was lifeless all season. this year we have some interesting water, current, bait all over. just a matter of getting in the right position on the right day.

I think it may to do with BET eating on or near the bottom very deep. Althrough there is researach done that yellow fin have been tagged 3000 deep. Albies i don't know. I can say that there is no hard temp break, bait and fish are scattered. The fish are around the bait. Has anyone fished real deep, or know how the long liners are doing out there. We need a fresh warm core to bring nice water into the mix. I look east and see something by welker. By then again that far away, October it could be here. What to do before then.
