Canyon Runner Reports - 8/10-8/12 - Tuna Fishing is Terrible

Capt. Phil Dulanie, after having to take a month off fighting pneumonia, was back in the saddle again on Sunday on the 60’ Ritchie Howell Canyon Runner but should have continued to stay home. Fishing Sunday/Monday with the Guy Checcio charter and then again Monday/Tuesday with the Paul Peddretti charter they covered almost all of the Hudson Canyon and up to the Dip and offshore only to catch a total of one yellowfin on Sunday and one white marlin on Tuesday. Chunking was dead and trolling was dead.

Capt. Mark DeBlasio was on the 48’ Canyon Runner Sunday/Monday and again Monday/Tuesday with the Fred Quinto and Mike Lilonsky charters respectively and had the exact same results as the 60’ except they had a few more shots at marlin on Monday afternoon going 1 for 3 on whites and 0 for 1 on a blue that they pulled the hook on. They also added a 41 pound mahi for the Lilonsky charter.

Needless to say – tuna fishing is horrible. We ended up canceling a charter Tuesday to Wednesday even though the weather was doable as the fishing is just not worth the time, effort and expense. Hopefully the storm coming up the coast shakes things up and the fish will start biting on the other side of the moon.

Thanks for the reports - - these types of reports are every bit as valuable as hearing about the banner days.

Sorry the fishing was no better for you guys. Hopefully it will blow wide open and you fellas will get a great late season.
You guys further earned my respect by cancelling a trip due to poor fishing. There are a lot of boats that would have taken their parties for a ride anyway. Kudos to the Canyon Runner crews.

Thanks guys - yes there are definately big-eye around as few boats each day are getting there shot but the problem is there are no longfin mixed in to fill in the blanks and nothing on the chunk yet.

That said I firmly believe once this quick northeaster blows through tonight and tomorrow morning and we get on the back side of the moon we should see the chunk turn on.
