    Canyon Runner Reports - 3 More Big-Eyes (4 for 6 on Big-Eyes this Week)

    August 4

Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia took out Damien Romeo for a day troll Saturday. The only goal of the trip was to try to land a big-eye. Damien does a whole bunch of trips with us every year and was committed to either catch nothing or catch a big-eye on this trip so we went back to the Hudson Canyon where we hooked 5 this week alone (see reports below). We were hopeful they were still there so Damien would get his shot. This is unbelievable but they actually got another big-eye Saturday on a day when we were actually targeting big-eyes. I have written articles about never ever trying to just target big-eyes as that is the easiest way to spoil a productive canyon trip. I still stand by that as that was the only fish they put in the boat in 4 hours of trolling but on this trip with Damien that one fish, to quote Damien was better than 100 yellowfin!!! Congratulations Damien - this one weighed in just over 150 pounds and ate a 9" Canyon Runner Rainbow squid on the long ringer at the west elbow of the Hudson Canyon.

    August 2-3
Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia had the Dean Friedman charter out Thursday to Friday for an overnighter and headed right back to the Hudson Canyon in search of a little better bite. Unfortunately the trolling for yellowfin keeps slowing down in the Hudson and all they did Thursday afternoon was one small yellowfin and a few mahi. The yellowfin was trolled on a ballyhoo by the west elbow of the Hudson. They set up on the chunk right at 200/100 and did nothing at night. Up on the troll in the morning they worked back up to the bombs waiting for a miracle and it came at 6:30am when a wolf-pack of 3 big-eyes piled on the spread and hooked up to two ballyhoo and a zucchini tuna clone. The one on the clone came within 20 wraps of spooling the Penn International 50VSW and dropped off. They fought the other two for 45 minutes and darted both. One of them was around 140 and the other around 180. They put them in the boat and came home early.

    July 31 - August 1

Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeCabia with mate Mike Zajac had the Joe Scott charter out to the Hudson Canyon with his 4 kids Tuesday to Wednesday and got there late so he went right to the chunk at 200/100 on the drift. They had very little bait but finally had the tuna come thru at 4am and pulled 1 yellowfin despite having fish right in the slick at the back of the boat. Up on the troll in the morning they trolled from north of the bombs down to the west elbow down the letters to the southwest corner back up to the bombs and over to the east elbow and picked one yellowfin by the Bombs and one yellowfin at the west elbow. The fish ate 9" and 6" Canyon Runner rainbow squid bars.

    July 30-31

Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Brian McGinnus charter out on the HU2 Monday to Tuesday and headed out to the Bombs putting them just short of the edge and trolled all the way day down to the 200/100 and letters and then back up to the Bombs and only had 4 misses on the bars hooking nothing. He choose to drift by the Bombs and ended up pulling a 100 pound mako at night caught on a J-hook on 80 pound flouro and a sardine meant for tuna. Up on the troll in the morning they finally got some tuna bites that held with one yellwfin at the Bombs and 1 longfin and 1 yellowfin just south of the Bombs. In between he picked 10 mahi and actually trolled another small mako. The tuna were caught on Canyon Runner 9" squid spreader bars and green machine bars.
