Canyon Runner Report - First Giant of Our Season - 650 Pounds

Capts. Mark DeBlasio and Pete Doran have switched over to giant tuna fishing for the fall/winter season on the 48 Canyon Runner. They moved the Canyon Runner up to Chatham on Monday afternoon and Tuesday was their first full day of fishing. They didn't catch anything on Tuesday, a 71 inch short on Wednesday afternoon (released) and a 70 inch short in the middle of the night at 3am (released).

Drift fishing they reset this morning just before slack tide and the fish bait in the water - a herring - was engulfed by the right one this time just seconds after walking away from the rod. This one took one hour to fight and we were lucky enough to put it in the boat. It is around 650 pounds.

I'll have pictures later in the week.

Thanks guys - the fished weighed 651 pounds on the scale after it was gill gutted which puts it at somewhere slightly over 700 pounds.

Kobey drove up with us on the boat but then offloaded when they got there and is fishing with someone else.

Capt. DeCabia is running the 60' Canyon Runner and nailed 12 yellowfin and a longfin today on a day chunk in the Hudson Canyon. I'll post a more detailed report but basically they chunked from 7:30am to 3pm and landed all the fish on the chunk. The yellowfin were 30-40 pound fish and the longfin slightly bigger. We will be doing day chunks from now until the water/fish move out.
