Canyon Runner Oregon Inlet Reports - Slow Fishing

Well we started our 2009 tuna season (if you don't count giant tuna in January) out of Pirate's Cove Marina in Manteo, NC this past Friday and were hoping to continue with nice bluefin fishing that had been located in warm water due east of Oregon Inlet. Don't you know that water broke up Thursday and we were left looking for yellowfin.

Unfortunatley the yellowfin fishing down there is not much different than it was up in NY/NJ last year as they have not showed yet.

We put in two day trolls on Friday and Saturday with the Steve McMannimen advanced tutorial charter out of Connecitcut and they spent 48 hours with hands on training on all aspects of fishing but not much catching. We have a couple yellowfin and a few gaffer mahi but not much more.

On Monday the John Lewis charter from Cape May, NJ did a day troll and fishing around the Point and 10-15mile to the southwest we only picked at a mahi and there may not have been a tuna in the fleet.

What there are though is a lot of makos and swords. The longline fleet is bascially fishing the same water and we've been fishing and tonight we are going to do overnighter - if anything happens I'll put up a real time report so check in tonight.

Good luck on the swording thing. It sure can make up for a few days of drowning baits.
Looking forward to the post. Don't forget the camera.

The man told me two things. There are a crap load of swords, but the LL's haven't hardly been able to get past the BFT's to get to them.

He also told me that now that the Bft's are probably leaving/left, the YFT's will feel safe enough to set up shop.

    Thumbs up Canyon Runner

Adam, in spite of the fishing we had a good time. Your Richie Howell is an impressive boat and Capt. Mark and Mate Pete are great guys that really know what they are doing.
You left out the hammer head that Mark got to eat a bali. That gave us some excitement until he chewed the leader. Then while clearing a spreader bar to make way for the mahi the hammer head came back and chased the bar right up to the boat.
I enjoyed fishing with Mark and Pete on Monday and look foward to fishing with them again soon.
Best of luck on the over night trip.
