Canyon Runner Last 3 Trips - 5 Swords to 270#/Big-Eye/32 Tuna - PICS

48 Canyon Runner 9/23-24 – 3/4 Swords to 270 Pounds/15 Yellowfin

Capt. Mark DeCabia and Capt. John Timken had the Dave Miguel charter from Lipinski Landscaping out Wednesday to Thursday and put together one of the better chunking trips of the year. They were on a turn around so they got to the east wall of the Hudson Canyon later in the afternoon and decided to go right to the chunk at 5:30. Maybe that was the key but for whatever reason they had fish the entire night.

The set up 2 sword rods and had action on them all night. The first fish was right around 100 pounds and put in the boat. That was followed by several 25-30 pound yellowfin. Almost all the yellowfin came on hammered diamond jigs with a few on sardines. In between a half dozen yellowfin came the second swords of the night – a nicer fish in the 130 pound class. More yellowfin followed and then around 2pm another sword bite. This one was different. It went through the charter 4 or 5 times before finally being close enough for the Poon. She measured out a 84” and tipped the scale at 270 pounds.

With 12 yellowfin on ice and a few released plus adding the big sword they pulled all but one sword rod out of the water at 3am and waited for sun-up to run home. With the sun fully in the sky the last rod out got bit and another bigger swords came right to the top of the water in the broad day light. This hook pulled shortly into the fight and they came home.

60 Canyon Runner 9/23-24 – 170# Sword/White Marlin/4 Longfin/Yellowfin

Capt. Phil Dulanie and Capt. Mark DeBlasio had the Joe Kay and Brett Ridley charter out Wednesday/Thursday and spent some time pulling tilefish in the 400-600 feet of water on the west wall of the Hudson as the trolling bite was slow. They pulled some nice tiles fairly consistently and then put her on the trolling. Don’t you the trolling turned out nice with 3 hours of trolling producing 2 50 pound longfin and a nice white marlin release.

They set up for the chunk in the 600 feet of water at the 100 square and started working the slick. They did not have a hot bite but did end up picking away at 2 more big longfin and a 70 pound yellowfin. The highlight of the trip though was a fat swordfish that put up a long fight. The fight ended when the Poon was thrown 30 feet by Capt. DeBlasio which landed true but did not immediately end the fight. The sword pulled 100 feet of poly dart line out of the crews hands while Capt. Dulanie quickly climped on a rod to the ball on the end of the dart line. The sword pulled the ball under and they ended up fighting it on both rods for a few minutes before the ball ended up taking out the fish.

48 Canyon Runner 9/22-23 – 180# Big-eye/12 Yellowfin (25-50 Pounds)/Longfin/Sword/Mahi

Capt. Mark DeCabia and John Timken had the Anthony Electric charter out on the 48 Canyon Runner Tuesday to Wednesday and put together another excellent trip. They tried the inshore bluefin grounds which don’t seem to be as automatic as they once were and struck out. They then tried mahi fishing on the pots which seem to have gotten hammered of late by the party boats and others fishing the edge. So they anchored up in the Hudson Canyon on the east wall by the mouth and sent out the night time spread.

By 8:30pm they boxed up a 180 pound big-eye and released a small sword and then the action really turned on. The yellowfin started to show and an even dozen were put in the boat with almost all in the 25-30 pound class with one at 50 pounds. They also nailed a big longfin and a few mahi. The night was also interrupted with another sword in the 150# class that they had under the boat for a while but eventually pulled the hook on before getting a chance to throw the Poon. The ran home at first light to do a turn around and due to the fact that the trolling bite is almost none existent on tuna.
