Canyon Runner Hillsboro Sail report 1/7/2005

Today we had Mr. and Mrs. Tiano out for a day of sailfishing on the BIG BOY, a 54' bertram the Canyon Runner will be using for their charters in South Florida. Capt. Jason Neadel had a few sail bites the day before to the north so we headed 5 miles north of Hillsboro and put a spread of 2 kites out. Within 5 minutes we had a double hooked and jumping all over the place. Mrs. Tiano quickly jumped her fish off but John got a clean release after a feisty fight! We set up again in 140' and about an hour later we had some sails moving through. A little guy, maybe 25lbs, was chewing on our right long kite bait, but the hefty gog was too much and we couldn't get a solid hook up. After we get the bait back out we quickly had another sail come, we all watched him eat the bait, and thats exactly what he did, take the bait cutting the bridle and continuing on his way! We continued to push offshore to find some mahi and in 300ft we had a great blue/green edge and quickly went 1/2 on mahi. We decided to pick up and move south and set up in 90ft. After setting up we had a free jumper about 25yds behind out long kite bait, I quickly raised the bait to the surface to get that gog grunting and thrashing around and within seconds he ate it and John was tight on another sail! After a great ariel show he got his second release for the day. The last hour was uneventful except for a fierce bite on our deep rod which ended up pulling he hook.
Ended the day 2/4 on sails, had one mahi and a few kig cut offs.
Thanks for a great trip Mr. and Mrs. Tiano!

You have to give the camera guy some prop's on this photo .
Do you find that you pull more of your bite on kites?
I have not used mine i bought a few last year but have never really had the urge to put them out. I know down in florida this is a daily thing for you all though.

Yes, I think the kites are extremely productive, not with just sails either. I use SFE kites only, and the new HEAVY wind one they have works flawlessly as well! I find that the kite works well in two conditions...when the bite is concentrated (hot) and when the bite is EXTREMELY slow (Not). The presentation of the baits within the first 2ft of the water is second to none! Like in my report when I said there was a free jumper behind the bait...literally within seconds of me raising the bait to the sruface and it started thrashing around it got inhailed!

Thanks for the props on the pics...i have definately improved my photography skills over the last few years!
