Well the 2007 canyon season is finally over for us. We hope everyone had a great season offshore and hopefully either our Seminar, reports, or tackle helped put you on a couple more fish.
Between the two Canyon Runner Crews we got in 110 canyon trips with each Crew spending over 100 days on the edge. It was an interesting year to say the least with huge numbers of yellowfin in early June and the best big-eye bite anyone has seen in over 20+ years. While we are still fishing, finishing up our season in New Jersey pursuing stripers, we already have are eyes focused on staying on top of bigger quarry.
Remember last winter, the bitter cold, the snow every other day, the misery? We do and we want no part of it. As such, the Canyon Runner will again be headingsouth for the winter of 2007-8. Immediately after Thanksgiving Capt. Mark DeBlasio will set sail for Virginia Beach to try and extend our yellowfin season just a little longer. From there it is on to Morehead City, NC to hopefully put a few Giant Tuna in the boat during December. Nothing like putting 500+ pound tuna on your holiday wish list!!
Once the New Year rolls around we will keep heading south towards our final goal – spending January through April in 80-degree weather, watching the girls in bikinis, and putting our charters into sailfish and swordfish just a few miles offshore of the Florida beaches.
January through April marks the height of the sailfish and swordfish season off Florida's southeast coast. Southeast Florida earned its reputation as the "Sailfish Capital of the World" for one reason - very often sailfish congregate in such numbers that boats often see 10-20 sails a day and double digit catches are not uncommon. Your day can be spent in shorts and tee shirts within sight of land live-baiting one of the world's most acrobatic billfish. And when your day is done - once in South Beach - how your night is spent is up to you as there are many attractions that we guess could keep you busy.
But what most people come for is not the night life on land but the night life offshore. A trip out of Miami at night will put you into the hottest swordfish bite on earth. Last winter saw boats getting 6-10 shots at swords before the clock struck mid-night and some of those were bruisers up to 400 pounds. There are few things more enjoyable then drifting the Gulf Stream in 70-80 degree weather with Key Largo, Miami, and Ft. Lauderdale providing the background lighting, putting a few swords in the boat, and being back at the dock in time for last call.
To top it off, the proximity of the best fishing action to the dock makes these trips extremely affordable. We are already booked 25 out of the first 30 days we are down there but we still have plenty of dates available.
